Geoff Allardice Resigns as ICC CEO Just Before Champions Trophy 2025 Amid Concerns Over Pakistan's Readiness

Geoff Allardice, the CEO of the International Cricket Council (ICC), announced his resignation on Tuesday (January 28) just weeks before the Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled in Pakistan and the UAE.

A board member suggested that one reason for his departure is his inability to clearly communicate Pakistan's lack of readiness as a host. Allardice, aged 57, joined the ICC in 2012 after working with Cricket Australia.

Geoff Allardice Resigns as ICC CEO

He initially served as General Manager of Cricket before becoming the ICC's CEO in November 2021, following an eight-month stint as acting CEO. "It has been a privilege to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council and I am incredibly proud of the results we have achieved, from enhancing the global reach of cricket to the commercial foundation put in place for ICC Members," Allardice stated. "I believe this is the right time for me to step down and pursue new challenges," he added.

ICC Board's Reaction

The ICC's official statement did not specify why Allardice is leaving. However, a top source mentioned that this decision has been developing over time. The ICC T20 World Cup in the US faced issues with playing conditions and budget overruns, which are still under audit.

"What broke the camel's back was the Champions Trophy where as CEO, he was supposed to give a clear picture about the readiness of Pakistan to host a tourney of such magnitude," said a board member anonymously.

The Champions Trophy is scheduled to begin on February 19, with India playing its matches in Dubai due to security concerns in Pakistan. The main worry for the ICC is that venues in Karachi and Rawalpindi are still undergoing construction or renovation. Images from these sites do not present an encouraging view.

Whether Pakistan will be ready for this major event remains uncertain. The tournament features the world's top eight teams and is being held for the first time since 2017. Despite these challenges, ICC Chair Jay Shah commended Allardice's contributions to cricket.

"On behalf of the ICC Board, I want to sincerely thank Geoff for his leadership and commitment during his tenure as Chief Executive. His efforts have played a key role in advancing cricket globally. We are truly grateful for his service and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours," Shah expressed.

Leadership Changes

The ICC Board will now start looking for Allardice's successor. His departure adds to a series of exits from former chair Greg Barclay's team at the ICC. Previously, Chris Tetley, head of events; Alex Marshall, head of the Anti-Corruption Unit; and Claire Furlong, head of marketing and media, resigned for personal reasons.

The ICC faces significant challenges ahead with leadership changes and upcoming tournaments. The organisation must address venue readiness and financial audits while ensuring smooth transitions within its executive team.
