Gerald Coetzee ruled out of SA20 2025 due to injury, the Joburg Super Kings confirmed on Sunday (January 19), adding a blow to the quicks chances of making the South Africa squad for the Champions Trophy 2025.
South Africa left out Coetzee from their preliminary squad for the upcoming ICC event scheduled to start on February 19, but the Protea were dealt a blow when one of their fast-bowling picks, Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the tournament.

Now, adding another blow to the Proteas Champions Trophy quest, Coetzee, who would have been an ideal replacement, is also likely to miss the ICC tournament due to an hamstring issue.
"Joburg Super Kings fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has sustained a left hamstring strain and therefore will take no further part in SA20 2025. Gerald last played against Durban's Super Giants on the 14th of January," the franchise released a statement.
"The 24-year-old will undergo further medical assessments and rehabilitation. An update will be provided in due course," Joburg Super Kings' statement further read on what is planned fo the pacer without revealing any timeframe for his return.
With Nandre Burger and Lizaad Williams already injured, Nortje being ruled out with a back issue, left a void in South Africa's pace attack. Coetzee was expected to fill the slot, but the the fast bowler's fitness remains uncertain, and his availability for the Champions Trophy hangs in the balance.
If Coetzee does gain fitness soon, he is likely to join South Africa's squad for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. If unavailable, South Africa will need to explore other options, including promising quicks like Kwena Maphaka, Corbin Bosch, and Ottniel Baartman.
Coetzee was expected to miss the start of SA20 after picking up an injury during last year's Test assignment against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The pacer, however, recovered to feature in one match of the SA20 2025 season before pulling up sore again.
His injury track record will also be a worry for Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans, who roped in the pacer for Rs 2.4 crore at last November's IPL Mega Auction 2025.
