Gideon Peters Fast-Tracks To IPL With Delhi Capitals After Proteas ODI Call-Up

Pretoria fast bowler Gideon Peters is moving fast in cricket after stepping away from rugby. Guided by school coach Cobus Pienaar, the 26-year-old pace bowler has earned a Proteas ODI call-up, SA20 success with Pretoria Capitals, and a training opportunity with Delhi Capitals in the IPL.

Pretoria is Blue Bulls territory, where rugby rules. Peters once chased that dream, playing fullback and wing in Bulls age-group teams. Pienaar, Director of Cricket at Waterkloof High School and nephew of Fanie de Villiers, convinced him his future lay in bowling above 140 km/h.

School mentor spots rare pace

Peters met Pienaar in Grade 11, soon after Pienaar ended a provincial career with Northerns at Centurion. Peters played both sports but had advanced further in rugby. Despite early injuries, Pienaar saw a rare gift. Peters could bowl genuinely fast and loved a contest.

Pienaar said Peters had magic feet, strong attacking skills, and safe hands under the high ball. In cricket, he was injury-prone, so coaches modified his action. Peters then made Northerns U19, earned SA Colts recognition in 2017, and began to see cricket as a career.

Temper, competitiveness and growth

Pienaar described Peters as hot property, with an X-factor and the ability to reach 140 clicks an hour. He also noted a short temper and a refusal to back down. Peters learned to accept that the team and programme must come before individual goals.

Peters’ progress has been slowed by fitness issues. His body has faced many tests. Although he has taken 13 wickets for Pretoria Capitals across two SA20 seasons at 21.84, he has played little cricket between tournaments, only recently stringing together games for the Warriors.

Fitness concerns and workload planning

Pienaar said Peters had hamstring, glute, and lower-back issues early on. Bone breaks in his landing foot also troubled him. He called Peters very strong, with large muscle mass that can invite injuries, and believes careful workload management, with fewer practice overs, is essential.

Peters’ recent fitness run led to a maiden Proteas ODI squad call for the tour to Pakistan at the start of the year. Now training with Delhi Capitals in this IPL season, he is seen by Pienaar as a fierce competitor who can break games open.
