Gilchrist, Johnson fashion Australia's emphatic 9-wicket win

Vadodara, Oct 11 (UNI) Adam Gilchrist led Australia to a nine-wicket rout of India after Mitchell Johnson maiden fiver skittled the hosts out for 148 in 39.4 overs in the fifth one-dayer of the seven-match series at the Reliance Cricket ground here today.

Australia made 149 for one in 25.5 overs to record a comprehensive win with Gilchrist remaining unbeaten on a 77-ball 79 and captain Ricky Ponting unconquered on 39.

With this win, Australia have taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series and with just two matches left to be played, they cannot lose the series.

Having to defend just 148 runs, the Indians came out with the captain M S Dhoni deciding to give the first over to Harbhajan Singh. The move did not pay off as both Matthew Hayden and Gilchrist, knowing they did not have to take any risks, made a steady start.

Hayden's was the only wicket to fall when he dragged a ball from outside the off stump onto his stumps with R P Singh being the bowler. Hayden made 29 in 39 balls with four fours, though he had to have a runner for the major part of his innings after suffering a side strain and he did not look as fluent in batting as he usually does.

The departure of Hayden saw Gilchrist take over as he smote three sixes in one over of Murali Kartik to race to his 50 in 54 balls with four fours and three sixes in it.

Ponting at the other end looked his fluent self accumulating runs and remained unbeaten on 39 when the winning runs were scored.
