Gill, Arshdeep, Abhishek, Brar Add Star Power to Sher-e-Punjab T20 League

Chandigarh, August 2: The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League is set for its upcoming edition, with several prominent Indian cricketers, including Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh, set to feature in the tournament.

The tournament's official logo was unveiled at the Punjab Cricket Association International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Sunday. The competition will be held from August 30 to September 13, with six teams battling across 27 matches for the title.

Gill, India's Test and ODI captain, along with pacer Gurnoor Brar, will initially be away on national duty in Sri Lanka until August 28.

Gill Backs League As Platform For Youngsters

Gill believes the tournament can play an important role in providing opportunities to Punjab's emerging cricketers and those aspiring to break into the Indian team. "It is going to be a great platform for all of them," Gill said at the launch event, which was attended by PCA president Amarjeet Mehta and secretary Gurmeet Singh.

The tournament will follow a round-robin format, with each franchise featuring one marquee player and at least two icon players.

Gill Recalls Early Cricketing Days

Gill also reflected on his journey from playing cricket in Fazilka to becoming one of India's leading players. He credited his father for supporting his ambitions from an early age.

The Indian skipper also spoke about his family's efforts to nurture young talent through a cricket academy in his village.

"We also run a cricket academy in our village where free coaching is given so that children from the nearby areas can come and play there," Gill said. "Whenever my father gets some free time, he goes to the academy to watch the children play. I think it is because of his love and passion for cricket that I am sitting here today," he added.

PCA Hails Punjab's Cricketing Legacy

PCA secretary Gurmeet Singh highlighted Punjab's long history of producing elite cricketers, pointing to legends such as Lala Amarnath and Yuvraj Singh, as well as the current generation led by Gill, Arshdeep Singh and Prabhsimran Singh.

"Punjab has always been one of India's strongest contributors to cricket. From Lala Amarnath to legends like Yuvraj Singh, and now players like Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Prabhsimran Singh and women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur," Gurmeet said.

"The state has consistently produced world-class cricketers. The depth of talent in Punjab is unmatched, and that is why we believe the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League will become one of the country's premier domestic T20 competitions," he added.

PCA president Amarjeet Mehta said the league would allow upcoming players to learn alongside established names while allowing them to showcase their skills on a larger stage.

"The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League will allow aspiring players to share the dressing room with international stars, showcase their talent on a bigger stage, and take the next step forward in their cricketing journey," Mehta said.
