Australia named a strong 16-member squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia which starts from March 17 following the third and fourth Test matches of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

All-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh are set to make their comeback after their long time away from the game due to broken leg and ankle injury respectively. Both the players last played for Australia in November, 2022. Pacer Jhye Richardson is also back in the white-ball squad after an injury-enforced lay-off from international cricket that also saw him miss the closing stages of the Big Bash League (BBL) because of a hamstring injury. The 26-year-old last played for Australia during their white-ball leg of their tour of Sri Lanka last year.

Further, the trio of David Warner, Ashton Agar and captain Pat Cummins who have travelled back to Australia - have also been named. Warner suffered a hairline fracture in his knee, Agar went back to feature in the Sheffield Shield Trophy, while Cummins had to rush home due to a serious family illness. However, he is expected to return before the start of third Test in Indore from March 1.

Notably, out-of-form David Warner has been named in the squad despite an injury which forced him to return back home after the second Test in Delhi. Senior pacer Josh Hazlewood, on the other hand, has been omitted as he continues to recover from an Achilles injury.

The likes of Maxwell, Marsh, Warner, Richardson, Hazlewood, Adam Zampa, Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis will stay in India after the ODI series for IPL 2023. Pace spearheads Cummins and Mitchell Starc are skipping the lucrative tournament due to the busy schedule.

The ODI series will be an opportunity for the Australians to figure their team composition and prepare themselves for the World Cup in India later this year. They play one more bilateral series against India in September, just ahead of the marquee event.

"With the World Cup just over seven months away, these matches in India are an important step in our preparation," chief selector George Bailey has said.

"Glenn, Mitchell and Jhye are all important players in what we think the squad might look like come October," he added.

The ODI matches will be played on March 17 (Mumbai), March 19 (Vizag) and March 22 (Chennai).
