It was a moment that sucked the energy right out of the stadium. In what should have been a routine fielding effort turned into an injury scare for Gujarat Titans as New Zealand's Glenn Phillips was seen limping off the pitch, visibly wincing in pain, after suffering what appears to be a groin pull during Sunday's IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The drama unfolded in the sixth over when Ishan Kishan dabbed a ball outside off and took off for a quick single. Phillips, fielding as a substitute, sprinted in, scooped up the ball cleanly and launched a rapid throw-only to crumple to the ground seconds later, clutching his leg.

The crowd gasped. The physio bolted onto the pitch. And just like that, the Gujarat Titans were a man down, their athletic asset hobbling away gingerly with what looked like a pulled hamstring or groin.
The Titans had invested ₹2 crore in Phillips during the mega auction, banking on his electric fielding, explosive batting and all-round versatility. Ironically, he hadn't yet featured in the playing XI this season and was only on the field as a substitute. But even in limited appearances, his presence has been felt-his acrobatic dives and game-saving stops earning applause from all corners.
While fans were left concerned, no official word has emerged from the Titans' camp regarding the severity of the injury. But medical guidance suggests that groin strains can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to heal, depending on their intensity. According to WebMD, most mild to moderate cases bounce back within one to two months. However, more severe or recurring strains can linger for much longer, sometimes leading to lasting limitations in mobility and strength.
In Phillips' case, it's still unclear whether the injury is minor or something that could derail his season. Either way, the Titans medical staff are sure to play it safe. "You should regain all of your strength and ability to move after your muscle heals," states the expert advice-but with a cautionary note about long-term issues if the strain is serious.
The timing couldn't be worse. Gujarat Titans, already juggling their playing combinations, might now have to hold back a player who was on the cusp of a starting role. It's especially tricky considering Phillips has previously voiced his concerns about the IPL's Impact Player rule. Speaking to The New Indian Express, he mentioned, "It could potentially impact all-rounders," hinting at the extra layer of challenge for players like himself trying to cement a place in the XI.
Away from the seriousness, Phillips is known for keeping spirits high. He's a multi-talented sportsman, dabbling in archery, padel and golf during downtime, and recently shared light-hearted banter with captain Shubman Gill during the Champions Trophy. His energy and sense of humour have made him a team favourite.
For now, though, it's a waiting game. Gujarat Titans-and their fans-will be hoping the setback is short-lived and that Phillips returns soon, diving, sprinting and lighting up the field as only he can.
