Chennai, Feb 17: Glenn Phillips showcased his prowess by hitting the fastest fifty for New Zealand in T20 World Cup history at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday (February 17). Alongside Rachin Ravindra, he led New Zealand to an eight-wicket victory over Canada, securing their spot in the Super 8s from Group D.
Despite Yuvraj Samra's record-breaking century for Canada, the Rachin-Phillips partnership and Canada's erratic bowling overshadowed his achievement.

Canada's innings began with promise as Yuvraj Samra, at 19 years and 141 days, became the youngest to score a century in T20 World Cup history. Samra's 110-run knock, featuring six sixes and 11 fours, was a highlight. He capitalised on New Zealand's weakened bowling attack, missing Lockie Ferguson and Mitchell Santner. However, Canada's total of 174 wasn't enough to secure a win.
Chasing 174, New Zealand relied on the partnership between Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips. Their unbroken stand of 146 runs came off just 73 balls. Phillips remained unbeaten with 76 runs from 36 balls, while Rachin scored 59 not out from 39 balls. The duo's efforts saw New Zealand reach the target in just 15.1 overs.
Canada's early breakthrough came after Jaskaran Singh's expensive opening over, which cost 14 runs. Finn Allen counter-attacked with a quick 21 off eight balls before falling to Shivam Sharma's diving catch. Tim Seifert soon followed, leaving New Zealand at 30 for two in the third over.
Rachin and Phillips quickly stabilised the innings, taking New Zealand to 60 for two by the end of the powerplay. Rachin played aggressively, hitting a six over deep point and adding two boundaries in a single over. Phillips shifted gears post-powerplay, hitting consecutive boundaries off Saad Bin Zafar and launching Dilpreet Bajwa for a six.
The partnership reached its fifty in just 30 balls as New Zealand powered to 106 for two at the halfway mark. Rachin completed his half-century off 35 balls with a six over deep midwicket. He then sealed the chase by pulling Jaskaran through midwicket with 29 balls remaining.
Earlier, Samra set the tone for Canada by attacking Matt Henry in the opening over with consecutive fours. He accelerated in the final powerplay over against James Neesham, scoring 18 runs with a sequence of boundaries and a six. Samra reached his fifty off just 36 balls and formed a solid opening stand with skipper Dilpreet Bajwa.
Bajwa contributed with 36 runs off 39 balls in their record-breaking opening partnership of 116 runs against a Full Member team in T20 World Cups. Despite being dropped twice on scores of 91 and 107, Samra couldn't push Canada past the desired total as New Zealand restricted them to just 23 runs in the final three overs.
New Zealand concluded their league matches with six points and a net run rate of 1.227. South Africa leads Group D on net run rate and will face UAE next. Canada remains winless after three matches and will play Afghanistan in their final league game.
