Great things in store for Indian cricket with Anil Kumble 'Sir' as coach: Virat Kohli

Bengaluru, June 24: Test captain Virat Kohli has welcomed the appointment of Anil Kumble 'Sir' as India's new Head Coach.

Former skipper Kumble was on Thursday (June 23) named as India's coach for 1-year term. The 45-year-old's selection was hailed by fromer crickters and fans. (Reactions from Twitter)

Kohli, 27, was among of the many to take to the micro-blogging site Twitter on Thursday to congratulate Kumble on his new innings.

The right-hander felt "great things" were in store for Indian cricket with "Jumbo" as coach.

"Heartiest welcome to @anilkumble1074 Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian Cricket with you," Kohli tweeted to his over 11 million followers. ('Acche din' coming: Gavaskar)

This tweet of the batsman was retweeted nearly 4,000 times and had likes of more than 11,000.

"Given to his immense knowledge and experience, the BCCI is confident that Mr. Kumble will take Indian cricket forward and contribute to its growth and success. The Board is confident that Mr. Kumble will meet the consistent high standards of professionalism set by the Indian team and fulfills the expectatons of the followers of Indian Cricket," the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said.

"It's a huge responsibility, ready to take this role. Coaches come later, it's always players first. Strategy will be to win. Have a short and long plan for the upcoming series, but I cannot plan alone; need players to pitch in," said Kumble after his appointment. Kumble replied to the tweet saying he was looking forward to working with Kohli and the team.

Kohli will start working with Kumble later this month at a preparatory camp for the tour of the Caribbean. Kumble and Kohli's combination will have their first assignment next month as the West Indies in a four-Test series.

As a youngster Kohli has benefited from Kumble at the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
