Greatest Effect of Franchise Cricket: Harsha Bhogle Reacts After Williamson Declines NZ Central Contract

By MyKhel Staff

Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle has said Kane Williamson's rejection of New Zealand Cricket's central cricket showcases the greatest effect of franchise based leagues on a national side, which has already seen a veteran give preference to T20 leagues.

Williamson on Wednesday (June 19) announced his intention to pursue other opportunities during the January 2025 window, which usually saw the NZC centrally contracted players to give their full committment to national duty and Super Smash, a domestic T20 competition.

However, the skipper declined the central contract and also stepped down as captain from the white-ball teams. This is the second big name player after pacer Trent Boult from the Blackcaps camp to decline a contract in favour of franchise leagues.

Franchise based leagues have been taking over with tournaments being held across countries now, following the footprint of Indian Premier League (IPL). SA20 and ILT20 are the latest additions alongside Major League Cricket and Global T20 Canada.

Following the news of Williamson's contract rejection, Bhogle, who is doing commentary duties at the T20 World Cup 2024, where New Zealand made a early exit, took to social media to stress on the effect of franchise based leagues.

"The greatest effect of franchise based leagues on a national team is being felt in New Zealand where Kane Williamson has turned down a central contract because he will be unavailable for portions of the NZ summer," Bhogle posted on X.

"That is a major event and further evidence that NZ will have to navigate through this reality in the near future," Bhogle added as New Zealand cricket faces challenges.

Apart from Williamson, NZC also confirmed that speedster Lockie Ferguson has indicated he won't be accepting the central contract. As mentioned earlier, this all started after NZC released Bout two years ago to pursue overseas leagues.

Boult and Williamson may have played their final T20 World Cup. Another pacer Tim Southee also seemingly has made his final T20 World Cup appearance for the Blackcaps. The trio could still feature in big tournaments, while Williamson and Southee are likely to feature in Tests.

With Boult, Williamson, Southee and Ferguson unlikely to be available full time for the Kiwis, Bhogle added that New Zealand will need to make good use of their small pool to remain competitive in bilateral tournaments.

"With Boult coming to the end, Southee almost there and Ferguson contemplating not having a central contract, they will need to make the most of their small pool to stay competitive in bilateral cricket," Bhogle added.
