Gujarat Titans (GT) ended their IPL 2024 league stage campaign with back-to-back washouts against Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad, finishing outside the top four with just 12 points on board and the worst Net Run Rate (NRR).
After winning the title on their debut campaign in 2022 followed by a runner up finish last season, the depleted Gujarat Titans have failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time due to missing key players either through injury or losing the player via trade.

Ahead of the 2024 IPL Auction, GT had retained the core of the squad, but skipper Hardik Pandya’s trade to Mumbai Indians and Mohammed Shami’s season-ending injury cost them big time, adding pressure on young captain Shubman Gill, who slowly got into his groove in the closing stages of their campaign.
IPL 2025 auction will be a mega like GT’s first-ever experience of an auction in 2022, when they had acquired the services of Hardik, Gill and Rashid Khan via player draft.
Teams are reportedly being allowed only four retentions like the previous IPL Mega Auctions. However, there are also reports that the franchise owners have requested the BCCI to allow each team up to 8 retentions.
While there is no official confirmation on how many retentions will be allowed ahead of IPL 2025 Mega Auction, it is very likely that a minimum of 4 players can be retained by each team. Plus, there could also be a Right To Match (RTM) card available for every team.
If only 4 players are allowed to be retained, then GT may not face a huge dilemma on who to release and retain ahead of the next auction as they look to assemble a squad that could see them challenging in the next few seasons.
There are several players who GT would like to retain, but will be forced to release many ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction which could take place before the next season anywhere between December 2024 and February 2025.
Shubman Gill as the captain is likely to be the first retention for GT. But who among the likes of David Miller, Mohit Sharma, Sai Sudharsan, Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Rahul Tewatia among others will join the skipper in retention?
Sai Sudharsan, who has been firing in a struggling season with the bat this season, is likely to be the next pick alongside Rashid Khan, who is a match-winner on his day. So, these three are likely to the be the players who may be retained by GT before the next auction.
Noor Ahmad, Rahul Tewatia and several other Indian stars may be looked at during the auction, while many players’ time at the franchise may have ended. Meanwhile, the biggest headache for GT will be with the remaining retention.
GT will face a huge task of whether to take a chance on Shami, who is coming in on the back of a long injury lay-off or opt for Miller to give enough protection in the middle with his finishing ability.
Then there is also someone like Mohit Sharma, who could be a tempting choice, but GT may look at the seasoned pacer at the auction. So, let's see the possible retention list of the Titans:
