Gujarat Titans (GT) did the double over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) following a 56-run victory in match 51 of IPL 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (May 7).

After Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill quickfire knocks powered GT to their highest total of 227 for 2 in the allotted 20 overs, Mohit Sharma did the job with the ball to stop LSG's response at 171 for 7.

Openers Quinton de Kock (70 off 41 balls) and Kyle Mayers got LSG off to a great start, scoring 72 for no loss in the powerplay. The pair added 88 for the first wicket before Mohit removed Mayers for 48 after a brilliant catch by Rashid Khan in the deep.

Mohit, who was the pick of the GT bowlers, ended with figures of 4 for 29 in his quota of 4 overs. Noor Ahmad, Rashid and Mohammed Shami also claimed a wicket each for the hosts.

Earlier, put into bat, Saha (81 off 43 balls) and Gill (94 not out off 51 balls) went hammer and tongs from the word go to add 142 runs for the first wicket in only 12.1 overs, setting the franchise record for highest partnership for any wicket.

It was also the second-best stand for any team for any wicket in this IPL, and for Gujarat Titans, the total was their highest-ever in IPL since their debut last season.

Saha struck an overall four sixes and 10 fours to make 81 from 43 balls whereas Gill opened up tad late but finished close to what would have been a splendid maiden IPL century, hitting seven sixes and two fours in his 51-ball knock.

Gujarat Titans also bettered their overall record of most runs in the powerplay. Having hit 65 against Chennai Super Kings here in the season-opener, the Saha-Gill pair went ballistic to add 78 runs in the first six overs, scoring at 13 runs per over.

With the win, GT remain in pole position on IPL 2023 points table with 16 points after eleven matches and are very close to sealing a playoff spot, while LSG remain third for now in the table with 11 points from eleven matches.

GT vs LSG Post Match Comments

Losing captain, Krunal Pandya said: "We gave too many runs in the first innings. When it's 227, you have to go hard every over. The surface played really well. The batters said it was a good wicket to bat on. Had we restricted them to 200-210, we would have had a chance.

On brothers captaining against each other for first time in IPL history, Krunal added: "God has been kind to us, our family is proud, Mom is happy. She said at the end of the day, two points will come home only."

On Hardik and the catch, Krunal said: "There is so much of love between me and Hardik, there's hardly any banter. I can tell him about that (the catch), definitely."

Winning captain, Hardik Pandya said: "I don't ask anything more from the boys. The way the game changed after that, at one point i thought the game was even stevens and that catch was match changing. Both teams were driving at 100kph but that wicket caused a bump."

On bragging rights at the Pandya home, Hardik added: "I don't think there'll be bragging rights with Krunal. Our love is too strong, I hope he does well. I'd have been happier if things had gotten closer and he had some bragging rights too."

Player of the match, Shubman Gill said: "They were going well in the powerplay but our bowlers bowled well especially Mohit bhai. They restrict their batting line up to under 180 was a great effort."

On batting alongside Saha, Gill added: "Just to be able to share his (Saha) experience, I stand next to him at slip, it is phenomenal with the way he keeps going, he's been playing since the first IPL season."

On his knock, Gill said: "I didn't get much to bat in the first few overs but it is important to not get carried away with what your partner is doing. I had not hit sixes in the last two matches and today I struck a few, I always keep working on my skills."
