In a high-pressure IPL 2025 Eliminator at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Mumbai Indians (MI) delivered a commanding all-round performance to defeat Gujarat Titans (GT) by 20 runs, securing a berth in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Mumbai Indians posted a daunting total of 228/5 in their 20 overs. Rohit Sharma led from the front with a scintillating 81-run knock, providing a solid foundation. Key contributions from Suryakumar Yadav and then captain Hardik Pandya bolstered MI’s middle order, ensuring a competitive total on the board.

In response, Gujarat Titans suffered an early blow with captain Shubman Gill departing for just 1 run in the first over, bowled by the ever-reliable Trent Boult. Despite that, Sai Sudharsan stood tall, notching up a classy half-century and briefly reviving GT’s chase. His innings was notable not only for the composure under pressure but also for etching his name into the record books as the youngest player to score 700 runs in a single IPL season.
However, MI's bowlers tightened the screws in the middle overs, with disciplined spells from Bumrah and Boult. The required rate kept climbing, and wickets at crucial intervals prevented GT from building the kind of partnership they desperately needed. GT eventually finished on 208/6, falling 20 runs short and bowing out of the tournament.
The defining moment of the match came in the 14th over of Gujarat's innings, bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. At that point, GT were gaining momentum with Washington Sundar beginning to free his arms. A well-set Sudharsan at the other end was looking dangerous, and MI needed a breakthrough.
Bumrah, known for delivering under pressure, produced a masterclass. After setting up Sundar with a couple of sharp deliveries, Bumrah unleashed a searing yorker that clattered into the stumps. The GT batter was left on the floor and got castled at the same time.
Bumrah conceded just 4 runs and picked up the wicket of Washington, which started the stutters in the Gujarat run chase.
That wicket broke GT’s revival and put a massive blow to the chase. The psychological blow of losing a batter who could have taken the game deep, combined with Bumrah’s rhythm and leadership with the ball, decisively turned the game in MI’s favour.
With this win, MI march into Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings with momentum and confidence, while Gujarat Titans exit the season.
