GT vs MI, IPL 2025: When Will Jasprit Bumrah be Available For Mumbai Indians This Season? Head Coach Provides Update

Having lost their IPL 2025 season opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last Sunday (March 23), five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will be eager to field a strong squad when they face Gujarat Titans (GT) on Saturday (March 29).

Mumbai Indians will be boosted by the return of skipper Hardik Pandya, who has served his one-match ban, carried forward from last season for repeated offences of slow over rates. While the captain returns to take over from stand in skipper Suryakumar Yadav, MI will hope to have their premier pacer back soon.

MI's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has missed action since the start of the year when he pulled up with a back issue during the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. As a result of the back complaint, the star pacer was ruled out of the subsequent white ball games, including the Champions Trophy.

Bumrah has since been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, previous National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. As part of his long recovery process, The 31-year-old was also forced to miss the IPL 2025 opener.

The Mumbai-based side had made Bumrah their top retention, and hope to pair him alongside Trent Boult in the ongoing season. But the Indian pacer was not cleared to play by the NCA medical staff. However, an earlier report suggested that he is likely to join the MI squad at the start of April.

Adding to his recovery timeline, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene provided further update on his fitness as the end of March is near, while rumours circulated about him possibly bowling at the NCA. Here is the latest from the MI head coach:

Bumrah is unlikely to take the field today to take on GT, but as per earlier reports his comeback is not far away. Jayawardene also gave an update about his availability and possible return date if any in the pre-match press conference.

The MI head coach stated that the star pacer is still recuperating from his back injury at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. "Everyone is available except for Bumrah. Like I said in my last interview as well, it's on a daily basis that he's going through his programme," Jayawardene told the media.

Jayawardene further elaborated on the matter saying, Bumrah's recovery is progressing well, but there is no specific timeline for his return. "So far, everything seems okay. But there were no timelines given by NCA, so we'll wait on that," he added.

When will Japrit Bumrah return to action?

With previous history of back issue, BCCI and the Indian team management will be cautious with Bumrah's return to action. Hence, the pacer is still under recovery at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

However, as per the previous timeline, the pacer is expected to be cleared to join the MI camp at the start of April. So, if everything goes as planned, Bumrah will be available for Mumbai Indians possibly from their second match next month, which is against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium on April 7.
