GT vs PBKS, IPL 2025: Glenn Maxwell Disappoints on Punjab Kings Comeback, Breaks Record For Most Ducks

By MyKhel Staff

Glenn Maxwell had a comeback to forget as the Australian all-rounder drew a blank to start off his third stint with the Punjab Kings with a golden duck, and in the process registered an unwanted record in Indian Premier League (IPL).

Maxwell, who returned to the Punjab-based side after five years, registered his 19th duck in the lucrative league during the Punjab Kings' opening match of the IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (March 25).

The 36-year-old had come into the season with signs of form in the practice games, but carried on with his erratic approach in his first appearance this season. Walking into bat at the fall of Azmatullah Omarzai, Maxwell tried to reverse sweep R Sai Kishore and was trapped in front of the stumps.

With this first ball dismissal, Maxwell has now surpassed Rohit Sharma and former cricketer Dinesh Karthik to become the player with most ducks in IPL history. His struggle for runs and form saw him being dropped during his final season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

After RCB released him into the auction pool, Maxwell was handed a return to the Punjab Kings, where he spent seasons 2014-17 and 2020. He was bought by Ricky Ponting-coached PBKS for Rs 4.2 Crore. However, he carried on his irresponsible approach to the game.

The Australian all-rounder started the day on 18 ducks level with Karthik and Rohit, who got to 18 only in Mumbai Indians defeat to Chennai Super Kings earlier last week. Here is a look at the players with most zeroes in Indian Premier League:

Most Ducks in IPL

  • Glenn Maxwell - 19 ducks
  • Rohit Sharma - 18 ducks
  • Dinesh Karthik - 18 ducks
  • Piyush Chawla - 16 ducks
  • Sunil Narine - 16 ducks

Coming back to the match in Ahmedabad, put into bat, PBKS had reached 162/5 in 15.2 overs with Sai Kishore (3/26) being the chief destructor for GT. For Punjab Kings, skipper Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 64 off 30 balls.
