GT vs PBKS Unsung Hero: Sai Sudharsan might not have finished on the winning side, but his performance as Gujarat Titans' new opening batter was nothing short of a statement.
The young left-hander, who had previously dazzled in the IPL final last season, looked at ease at the top of the order, crafting a well-paced 74 off 41 balls. His fluent stroke play and ability to find the gaps made him one of the brightest positives for GT in their 11-run loss to Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad.

Handed the role of an opener, Sudharsan showed maturity beyond his years, timing the ball beautifully from the outset. Facing an attack that included Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada, and spin wizard Rashid Khan, he held his own, blending caution with aggression. His innings provided Gujarat Titans with the early stability they needed in their chase of 244, ensuring that the pressure didn't mount on the middle order too early.
His ability to rotate strikes efficiently and punish loose deliveries stood out. Sudharsan took charge, particularly between the ninth and 14th overs, a phase in which Gujarat plundered 87 runs, keeping them well ahead of Punjab's tally at the same stage. With Jos Buttler contributing a brisk 54 at No. 3, the Titans seemed poised to challenge Punjab's mammoth total.
While Sudharsan impressed for GT, Punjab Kings put on a batting masterclass earlier in the evening. Their innings was anchored by skipper Shreyas Iyer, whose unbeaten 97 off 42 balls powered PBKS to 243 for 5-their second-highest total in IPL history. His dominance was evident from the start as he took on the GT bowlers with aggressive strokeplay, smashing nine sixes in his knock.
Youngster Priyansh Arya, another bright prospect in the league, complemented Iyer's brilliance with a crucial 47 at the top of the order, proving why coach Ricky Ponting had high expectations from him. Shashank Singh provided the finishing touches with a whirlwind 44* off just 16 deliveries, including a final over assault on Mohammed Siraj that yielded 23 runs.
Even with Sudharsan's heroics, Gujarat's chase faltered in the final stretch, thanks to Punjab Kings' inspired bowling changes. The introduction of impact substitute Vijaykumar Vyshak proved to be decisive.
Brought in specifically for the death overs, Vyshak executed his yorkers with precision, restricting GT to just 10 runs across the 15th and 17th overs. His ability to maintain control under dewy conditions tilted the game in Punjab's favour, highlighting the importance of well-planned bowling changes in crunch moments.
Despite the loss, Gujarat Titans have plenty of positives to take forward. Sai Sudharsan's success as an opener offers them stability at the top, while Jos Buttler's adaptability at No. 3 adds depth to their batting. If they can fine-tune their death-over strategy and maintain their middle-over dominance, GT remains a formidable contender for the rest of IPL 2025.
