GT vs SRH: Mohammed Shami should 'retire' from T20s, SRH Fans blast their experienced pacer for expensive spell

By MyKhel Staff

Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami found himself at the receiving end of a storm of criticism on social media after a torrid outing against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025.

As Sunrisers Hyderabad's decision to bowl first backfired spectacularly, Shami's expensive three-over spell-where he conceded 48 runs-ignited widespread fan fury, with many calling for his immediate exclusion from the T20 format.

One exasperated fan summed up the mood bluntly: "Shami should retire from T20s. He's so finished. His economy is over 11 in the last 10 innings." Another echoed the sentiment more directly, demanding, "Shami should be removed from the team ASAP."

Gujarat's top-order, led by a blazing Shubman Gill and supported by a rapid knock from Sai Sudharsan, tore through SRH's bowling with surgical aggression. While Zeeshan Ansari managed to break the momentum with Sudharsan's wicket, the damage had already been done-much of it at the hands of Shami, who looked out of rhythm and lacking bite.

His deliveries were routinely dispatched to the fence, none more telling than the five-boundary blitz from Sudharsan in one over that effectively knocked the wind out of SRH's sails.

A particularly scathing remark questioned Shami's motivation and effort, stating, "Every over 10+++ runs dene ke kitne Rs mile aapko? Shame on you." Others lamented the management's decision to back him post-injury, saying, "SRH buying Shami post injury has cost them dearly this season... Any other Indian bowler would have performed better."

And it's not just one game that has upset fans. Shami's numbers this season paint a bleak picture-just six wickets in ten matches, with an economy rate that continues to balloon.

For a bowler once trusted to spearhead the attack, the drop in form has been jarring. With each game, questions about his match fitness, recovery post-injury, and long-term viability in the shortest format are becoming louder and harder to ignore.

A fan, clearly frustrated, commented: "Shami's bowling has been infuriating man." Another added salt to the wound by pointing out his alarming stats: "What happened to Shami? Bowled the second most expensive spell of IPL. Today he gave 48 runs in 3 overs. Is he ready for England tour?"

The harsh reality is that T20 cricket is unforgiving, especially for bowlers who lose their edge. Shami's pace and experience once made him a go-to weapon for India and IPL franchises alike, but now, with each outing, he's resembling a shadow of his former self. Fans' calls for his retirement might seem brutal, but in a league where performances dictate careers, sentiment takes a back seat.

Whether this was just an off day or a pattern too obvious to ignore, only time-and perhaps the SRH think-tank-can tell. For now, Mohammed Shami has a lot of questions to answer, and not just to the fans.
