GT vs SRH: Was Shubman Gill Run Out or Not Out? What does the Law Say? Controversial Call Explained

By MyKhel Staff

The IPL 2025 encounter between Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium witnessed a moment of major controversy involving GT skipper Shubman Gill.

The opener, who was cruising towards what seemed like a certain century, was dismissed under circumstances that left the crowd stunned and the batter visibly furious.

Was Shubman Gill Run Out or Not Out What does the Law Say Controversial Call Explained

The Run-Out Incident

The drama unfolded in the 13th over of Gujarat Titans' innings. Jos Buttler tapped the ball towards short fine-leg and called for a quick single. Gill responded immediately and raced towards the striker's end. Harshal Patel, stationed inside the circle, sprinted, picked up the ball, and fired a direct throw towards the wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen.

As Klaasen collected the ball and attempted to break the stumps, the bails came off. The appeal was referred upstairs for a third-umpire decision. After multiple replays and deliberations, the third umpire adjudged Gill run-out, concluding that the stumps were broken while Klaasen had the ball in hand.

Gill, who was batting on 76 off just 38 balls, was left shocked by the decision. He immediately stopped in his tracks and walked up to the on-field umpire, visibly agitated. What followed was a prolonged exchange of words and gestures as Gill questioned the legitimacy of the dismissal.

Why Shubman Gill Was Likely Not Out

According to the Laws of Cricket (Law 29.1), for a run-out to be legitimate, the wicket must be "fairly put down" either by the ball or by a fielder holding the ball. If a fielder breaks the stumps with their hand or body while not in contact with the ball, the batter is not out.

Replays showed ambiguity around Klaasen's exact contact with the stumps. Some angles suggested the ball may have slipped slightly or that his gloves broke the stumps before the ball made contact. However, the third umpire seemingly concluded that the evidence was conclusive enough to give the batter out.

This is where the controversy deepened: many viewers, and Gill himself, believed the footage was inconclusive or leaned towards "not out." In the absence of crystal-clear visuals proving Klaasen had the ball in contact with the stumps at the moment the bails were dislodged, a 'benefit of the doubt' call might have been more appropriate.

Gill's dismissal came just as Gujarat Titans were accelerating towards a formidable total. His presence at the crease was central to their batting momentum, and his departure shifted the balance of power in the contest. For a batter known for his composure, Gill's animated response probably highlights the gross error in the proceedings.
