GT20 Canada 2024 provides global platform to 24 cricketers from 8 Associate nations

By MyKhel Staff

The GT20 Canada 2024 season is featuring as many as 24 leading cricketers from eight ICC Associate member nations, providing them the grand platform of North America’s marquee T20 cricket league to showcase their skills. These include players from Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Scotland, UAE, USA and even Italy and Malaysia.

Leading the Associate charge at the GT20 Canada are the likes of the former Namibia allrounder David Wiese, who has also represented South Africa in the past and is a regular on the global T20 circuit. While Wiese is playing for Bangla Tigers Mississauga, Gerhard Erasmus, who led Namibia in the recent T20 World Cup, is the part of Montreal Tigers.

Gurmeet Singh Bhamrah, Founder of GT20 Canada, said, "GT20 Canada represents more than a cricket league; it's a dynamic platform fostering the growth of cricket in Canada while simultaneously providing unparalleled opportunities for players from various associate cricketing nations. Beyond exposure to top-tier competition, it serves as a stage for these athletes to demonstrate their talents, abilities, and unique contributions to the global T20 cricket landscape. Through GT20 Canada, these players not only enhance their skills but also inspire audiences worldwide with their passion for the game."

The veteran Netherlands duo of Paul van Meekeren and Logan van Beek, both of whom represented their country in the global T20 showpiece recently, are part of Vancouver Knights and Surrey Jaguars respectively.

Scotland’s George Munsey, known for his sweeps and reverse sweeps, is part of the Brampton Wolves squad. Brandon McMullen, who slammed 60 off 34 for Scotland against the mighty Australians in the Caribbean last month, is playing for Surrey Jaguars.

Vancouver Knights' star Sandeep Lamichhane stated,“For someone from an associate country, it's good to see one of the associate nations' franchise leagues growing. I am pretty excited about the GT20 Canada. You see franchise leagues all around the world and this league is one of them, which is just growing faster. So, it's definitely helping the players from Canada as they are meeting their superstars and learning from them. It's better for Cricket Canada. Also, being an associate nation player myself, it is always good to compete in the franchise leagues. GT20 Canada is helping other players from Nepal as well to improve their game.”

Malaysia captain Virandeep Singh (Surrey Jaguars) and Italy all-rounder Ben Manenti (Montreal Tigers) are also the part of the GT20 Canada’s fourth edition, which runs from July 25 to August 11 in Brampton, Ontario.

“I’ve watched the GT20 Canada for a while it’s always been a great spectacle and the overseas players this year are of the highest quality. I found out how many people play in Toronto and how big the game is, so it’s exciting to be over here for it. I’m just going to try soak up as much as I can from so many good players and coaches. I’ve played a lot with Chris Lynn, we get along really well on and off the field hopefully we can have some success and try to retain the trophy,” commented Manenti.

Having represented Nepal on the world stage in the West Indies, Rohit Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee are showcasing their skills for Toronto Nationals and Vancouver Knights.

There is a sizeable contingent from the UAE, including young spinner Aayan Afzal Khan, Player of the Match when his country stunned New Zealand last year in Dubai.

Also featuring in the league are Andries Gous (Toronto Nationals) and Harmeet Singh Baddhan (Surrey Jaguars), both of whom did national duties as the USA co-hosted the T20 World Cup.
