Gus Atkinson reflected on his recent achievements, acknowledging it would take time for them to fully sink in. The Surrey fast bowler scored a stunning 118 runs from 115 balls in England's first innings against Sri Lanka at Lord's. He then followed up with an impressive five-wicket haul, securing figures of 5-62 in the second innings.
Atkinson's performance helped England clinch a 190-run victory, giving them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series. This made him only the third England player to score a century and take five wickets in a single Test, joining an elite group that includes Ian Botham, who last achieved this feat in 1984.

Reflecting on his success, Atkinson said, "I couldn't have asked for much more; to get on both honours boards is incredible. It will take a while to sink in." He also cherished batting alongside Joe Root and expressed hope for continued success in future matches.
Atkinson has now taken at least two wickets in each of his first ten Test innings. This milestone places him among only seven bowlers in men's Test history to achieve such consistency, with Brett Lee being the last to do so in 1999.
"My first red-ball games at Lord's have gone my way," Atkinson noted. "I enjoy bowling with the slope; long may it continue." His ability to attack without worrying about runs has been a significant factor in his success.
While Atkinson has thrived, his Surrey teammate Ollie Pope has faced challenges with the bat. Standing in as captain for the injured Ben Stokes, Pope has managed only 30 runs across two matches. His highest score in five Test innings is just 17.
Pope acknowledged his need for improvement, stating, "That's the way cricket is sometimes; form comes and goes. The best players are the ones who can draw a line under it." He expressed hope for better performances moving forward.
Pope's leadership has also come under scrutiny. Former England captain Michael Vaughan commented that Pope lacks the personality he would want in an England captain. Addressing these concerns, Pope said, "When you're captain, you attract a lot more attention."
"It's important to block it out and stay close with the people around me," Pope added. He acknowledged that many voices and opinions surround him but emphasised that everyone is entitled to their opinion.
The recent performances of both Atkinson and Pope highlight contrasting fortunes within the England team. While Atkinson continues to shine with both bat and ball, Pope faces challenges that he hopes to overcome soon.
