In a powerful move, former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh has penned an open letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor CV Ananda Bose, expressing his "deep anguish" over the delay in justice for the victim of a gruesome rape and murder in Kolkata.

The incident, which took place on August 9 at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, involved the assault and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, sparking widespread outrage and protests across the nation.

Harbhajan Singh, known for his straightforwardness on and off the field, took to his official X account (formerly Twitter) to share the letter, which also addressed the broader Indian public.

The former cricketer stated, "This unspeakable act of violence, which shook the conscience of all of us, is not just a heinous crime against one individual but a grave assault on the dignity and safety of every woman in our society.

"It is a reflection of the deeply rooted issues within our society and a blatant reminder of the urgent need for systemic change and action by the authorities."

Singh's letter came as the nation continued to grapple with the horrifying details of the crime, which occurred within the confines of a medical institution-a place supposedly dedicated to healing and saving lives.

"The fact that such an atrocity could occur within the premises of a medical institution, a place dedicated to healing and saving lives, is both shocking and unacceptable," he wrote.

The former cricketer expressed frustration over the lack of "concrete action" by authorities more than a week after the crime. He noted that the delay had forced the medical community, already burdened by challenging working conditions, to take to the streets in protest.

"Their protests are understood and I wholeheartedly support the medical community in their fight for their cause of justice," Singh emphasized.

In his letter, Singh urged the West Bengal government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take immediate and decisive action to ensure that the perpetrators of this "vile act" are swiftly brought to justice.

He further pointed out that incidents like these have become a regular occurrence in news columns and television programs across the country, highlighting a systemic failure to protect women and bring culprits to justice.

"This is the time when we all should come together and make such a law that if any person does such a heinous act in future, then he should keep in mind what will be the consequences," Singh stated, addressing leaders at the highest levels, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu.

Singh's call to action reflects a broader demand for justice and safety for women across India. He ended his letter with a plea to restore faith in the system, insisting that the time for action is now.

"The safety and dignity of women are non-negotiable," Singh declared, urging swift and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators to ensure such tragedies do not occur again.

As protests continue to swell and the Supreme Court takes suo motu cognizance of the case, the nation watches closely, demanding not just justice for the victim but also a systemic overhaul to prevent such horrific crimes in the future.
