Mumbai Indians have undergone a significant change in their leadership dynamics ahead of the IPL 2024 season, as they announced Hardik Pandya as their new skipper on Friday (December 15).
Pandya is set to replace Rohit Sharma, who has been at the forefront of Mumbai's strategy and success for over a decade. Sharma's captaincy has been instrumental in securing five IPL championships for the team since he took over the role midway through the 2013 season.

Hardik Pandya made his mark in the league with Mumbai Indians. Pandya played 92 matches with them before transferring to the Gujarat Titans. With his impressive leadership, the Titans made two consecutive finals appearances, including a remarkable triumph in their inaugural season.
The robust all-rounder made a much-anticipated return to the Mumbai Indians prior to the IPL 2024 auction. As Pandya prepares to lead the Paltans, expectations are high for him to continue the legacy built by Rohit Sharma.
The Mumbai Indians franchise has publicly expressed immense appreciation for Rohit Sharma's exceptional leadership over the years, acknowledging his significant contributions to the team's storied history and his status as one of the IPL's most illustrious captains.
"We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary," MI global head of performance Mahela Jayawardene said.
"We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and wish him all the very best," he added.
