Hardik Pandya Set to Return to 50-Over Cricket After One Year With Vijay Hazare Trophy Comeback

By MyKhel Staff

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya is poised to make his return to the 50-over format after a year-long absence. The 31-year-old will feature for Baroda against Bengal in Round 4 of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on December 28 in Hyderabad.

Having missed the tournament's initial games due to personal reasons, Pandya's comeback is significant, especially with the ICC Champions Trophy on the horizon. Pandya last played a 50-over match during the 2023 ODI World Cup against Bangladesh.

There, an injury during his bowling spell ruled him out for the rest of the tournament. Since then, he has primarily focused on T20 cricket, playing 38 matches in the shorter format, including a successful stint in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).

Impressive SMAT Form

Pandya showcased his all-round capabilities during SMAT 2023, scoring 246 runs in seven matches with a strike rate of 193.70, including two half-centuries. With the ball, he claimed six wickets, highlighting his readiness for high-level competition.

His performances in domestic cricket align with the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) emphasis on players participating in domestic tournaments to remain match-fit and in contention for national selection.

Baroda captain Krunal Pandya, Hardik's elder brother, will lead the team as they look to capitalize on the ace all-rounder's experience. Hardik's participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy could play a crucial role in cementing his spot for the Champions Trophy and the upcoming India-England ODI and T20I series.

Pandya's return to the 50-over format is a positive development for the Indian cricket team, which seeks to solidify its lineup for major international tournaments. With his proven track record in ODIs-1769 runs at an average of 34.02 and 84 wickets-Hardik remains a vital asset.

While Andhra Pradesh's Nitish Reddy has emerged as a strong competitor for the all-rounder spot, Hardik's return to form and fitness could tilt the scales in his favor. Fans and selectors alike will closely monitor his performance against Bengal as he transitions back into the longer white-ball format.
