Pakistan's pace attack has suffered a setback as Haris Rauf has been ruled out of the ongoing Tri-Nation ODI Series due to injury. According to Cricket Pakistan, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named young left-arm pacer Akif Javed as Rauf's replacement for the remainder of the tournament.
This development comes as Pakistan prepares to face South Africa in a crucial encounter at the National Stadium on February 12. Haris Rauf sustained the injury during Pakistan's previous match against New Zealand, raising concerns over his availability for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

PCB later confirmed that Rauf suffered a muscular sprain in his lower chest wall, but medical evaluations assured that the injury is not severe. Although he is expected to recover in time for the Champions Trophy, team management has opted for caution, sidelining him from the Tri-Nation Series to aid his rehabilitation process.
Akif Javed, a 24-year-old fast bowler from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has earned his spot in the squad following a series of impressive performances in domestic and franchise cricket. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch, Akif gained attention with his performances in the Bangladesh Premier League, which ultimately convinced the selectors to give him an opportunity at the international level.
The left-arm quick first made his mark in Pakistan's domestic circuit in 2019 when he debuted in first-class cricket. He was part of Balochistan's squad in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and later showcased his skills in the National T20 Cup. His exposure to high-pressure T20 leagues came when he represented Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2020. Akif later went on to play for Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings, making him a well-rounded addition to Pakistan's fast-bowling arsenal.
With his inclusion in the squad, Akif Javed now has a golden opportunity to make his One-Day International (ODI) debut for Pakistan. The final decision regarding his participation against South Africa will be taken by the team management closer to the match.
While Haris Rauf's absence is a blow to Pakistan's pace attack, PCB remains optimistic about his availability for the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19 in Karachi. Pakistan, as defending champions and hosts, will be aiming to retain their title. Rauf's recovery will be closely monitored, as his experience and ability to deliver under pressure will be crucial for Pakistan's ambitions on the global stage.
