Dubai, Oct 4: Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged her team's subpar performance in their 58-run defeat to New Zealand in the Women's T20 World Cup opener on Friday (October 4).
Despite this setback, she remains optimistic about her team's potential for improvement. India was dismissed for 102 runs in 19 overs while chasing a target of 161, with no player scoring more than 20 runs.

Kaur expressed her disappointment at the post-match presentation, stating, "We didn't play our best cricket. Going forward we know every game is important."
She disagreed with the notion that the target of 161 was challenging on a slow pitch, noting that India has successfully chased similar scores before. "We have chased many times 160-170, we were expecting that on the board," she added.
Looking ahead to their upcoming match against Pakistan on Sunday, Kaur is confident in her team's ability to bounce back. "We know this group is capable of better, this wasn't the start we were expecting but we have to go from here," she stated. Kaur believes her team can overcome their arch-rivals with improved performances.
Reflecting on the bowling performance, Kaur admitted that her team failed to capitalize on opportunities. "We created chances but we were not able to avail those chances. They played better cricket than us, no doubt about that," she said. She highlighted fielding errors as an area for improvement, mentioning Renuka Thakur's outfield mistake and wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh's error during the Powerplay.
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine was named Player of the Match for her unbeaten 57 off 36 balls. She expressed surprise at her team's dominant performance against India, especially given New Zealand's recent struggles before the tournament.
"I'm really proud of this group. People have been speaking about our recent results, coming out against a world-class side like India, to produce that performance I'm overwhelmed," Devine remarked.
Devine emphasized that New Zealand had been focusing on this match for a long time and was thrilled with their execution against a strong Indian side. Her leadership and batting prowess played a crucial role in New Zealand's victory.
The Indian team will need to address their shortcomings quickly as they prepare for their next match. With lessons learned from their opening defeat, they aim to improve both their batting and fielding performances in upcoming games.
