Harry Brook’s IPL U-Turn? England Captain Opens Door After Months of Putting England First

Harry Brook has softened his stance on the Indian Premier League, admitting that he would consider returning to the competition in the future despite spending the last few months insisting that his focus was solely on England cricket and The Hundred.

The England white-ball captain, who has not played in the IPL since pulling out of the 2025 season, said his priority remains representing England but acknowledged the value of the league and the experience it offers players.

"Who knows what the future holds, but yeah, and like I said, I'm completely focused on playing as much cricket as I possibly can for England, and that is my one and only priority at the moment," Brook told Cricinfo on the sidelines of the 2026 Hundred.

However, when asked about a possible IPL return, the 27-year-old was considerably more open.

"Yeah, definitely. The IPL is a great competition, and it's a great experience, and you go over there, you leave a better player," he said.

"It's a very good competition to be a part of, and it's something that I'll definitely think about in the future."

Brook's latest comments mark a notable shift from his position earlier this year.

Since becoming England's white-ball captain, the batter had repeatedly emphasised his commitment to international cricket, saying as recently as last month that he had "committed completely to England cricket" and did not want to play franchise cricket apart from The Hundred.

That stance came after Brook pulled out of the 2025 IPL season following his selection at the auction. Under BCCI rules, he was subsequently banned from participating in the league until 2027.

That means a return is not immediately possible even if Brook changes his mind. But with his ban set to end ahead of the 2027 season, his latest comments have certainly reopened the possibility.

'You leave a better player'

Brook's change in tone also reflects the pull of the IPL beyond its financial appeal.

The England captain acknowledged that playing in India alongside some of the world's leading T20 players can contribute to a cricketer's development.

"You go over there, you leave a better player," he said.

That assessment is particularly relevant for Brook, who previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL before his withdrawal from the 2025 season.

For now, though, England remains his clear priority.

Brook is currently playing for Sunrisers in The Hundred, with the owners of the IPL franchise having taken over the Northern Superchargers and renamed the team Sunrisers Leeds.

He admitted that the change in ownership had brought some adjustments, particularly with the team's identity becoming more closely aligned with Sunrisers.

"Well, it's always going to be a little bit of change, obviously, with new owners, and there's a lot more orange around the ground now, as seen with the range Army. But it's the same with every franchise, really," Brook said.

"You try and get to know everybody as quickly as you possibly can, build some bonds, and yeah, at the end of the day, we're all here to try and win a few games of cricket."

For a player who had appeared to firmly shut the door on the IPL, Brook's latest comments suggest it was perhaps never quite locked.
