Harshit Rana Injury Update: 3 Players Who Could Replace KKR Star in Crutches at IPL 2026

Kolkata Knight Riders could be facing a major setback ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season after fast bowler Harshit Rana was spotted on crutches during a public appearance in Mumbai. The development has raised fresh doubts about the young pacer's fitness and whether he will be available for the upcoming tournament.

Harshit Rana

Rana attended the BCCI Naman Awards ceremony on March 15 but was unable to walk up to the stage to collect his award for Best International Debut (Men's). IPL chairman Arun Dhumal instead stepped down from the stage to present the honour to him. A video of Rana arriving at the event using crutches soon went viral on social media, prompting concerns about the extent of his injury.

What happened to Harshit Rana?

Harshit Rana suffered a knee injury earlier this year during a T20 World Cup warm-up match against South Africa. The injury ruled him out of India's T20 World Cup campaign, with Mohammed Siraj called up as his replacement.

The young pacer underwent knee surgery in Mumbai on February 9. Medical assessments suggested that Rana would need around two to three months to fully recover. While the procedure was reportedly successful, the recovery timeline overlaps with the start of IPL 2026, putting his participation in serious doubt.

Who could replace injured Harshit Rana in KKR?

If Rana is ruled out of IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders may consider signing a replacement from the pool of unsold players.

One option could be Akash Madhwal, who gained widespread recognition after his match-winning performance for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2023 Eliminator. Madhwal is known for his accuracy in the death overs and could provide a similar skill set to Rana.

Another possible option is left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya. His ability to swing the ball in the powerplay and use slower deliveries effectively could add variety to the KKR attack.

Simarjeet Singh is also a potential candidate. The Delhi fast bowler has IPL experience and can generate pace and bounce, which could suit certain pitch conditions.

Why Harshit Rana absence could hurt KKR

Harshit Rana has become an important member of the Kolkata Knight Riders bowling unit in recent seasons. Known for his pace and ability to deliver under pressure, he played a key role in the franchise's title-winning campaign in 2024.

His ability to bowl effectively during the death overs gave KKR a reliable Indian pace option, something that is particularly valuable in the IPL where overseas slots are limited.

If Rana misses the tournament, KKR could lose a bowler who has consistently provided breakthroughs in crucial moments.

KKR already dealing with pace concerns

Rana's potential absence could further complicate matters for Kolkata Knight Riders, who already have concerns in their pace department.

Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman is no longer part of the squad, while Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been dealing with fitness issues.

The franchise recently brought in Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani as an overseas replacement option. However, replacing Rana's role with an Indian bowler could prove difficult.

Currently, the Indian pace options in the squad include Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, Kartik Tyagi and Akash Deep. Without Rana, the bowling attack could appear less experienced heading into the tournament.

Waiting for clarity before IPL 2026

At present, there has been no official confirmation from Kolkata Knight Riders regarding Rana's availability for IPL 2026. The franchise is likely to monitor his rehabilitation progress before taking a final decision.

With the tournament approaching, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Harshit Rana can recover in time to feature for the defending champions. If not, KKR may be forced to rethink their bowling plans ahead of the new season.
