Has Rohit Sharma Played His Last Test Match?

By MyKhel Staff

As India gears up for the decisive fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, the cricketing world is abuzz with one pressing question: has Rohit Sharma played his last Test match? The Indian skipper's dismal form has raised retirement speculations.

Additionally, ambiguous signals from team management have placed his Test future under intense scrutiny. Rohit Sharma's struggles in the series have been glaring. Across five innings, the captain has scored just 31 runs, averaging a mere 6.20.

This is the lowest for any Indian touring captain in Australia with a minimum of five innings. Once considered India's batting linchpin, Rohit's inability to adapt to the red-ball challenges has raised questions about his longevity in the format.

Former coach Ravi Shastri didn't hold back during an episode of The ICC Review, saying, "He'll take a call on his career, but I won't be shocked if Sharma retires. He's not getting younger, and there are young players like Shubman Gill waiting for opportunities."

Adding to the uncertainty, head coach Gautam Gambhir avoided confirming Rohit's place in the XI for the Sydney Test during a pre-match press conference. "Everything is fine with Rohit," he remarked cryptically. "We'll look at the wicket and decide tomorrow."

Signs of the End?

Rohit's lean run coincides with a challenging phase for the Indian Test side. While the skipper has shown flashes of brilliance in the past, his recent performances suggest that he may be struggling to cope with the demands of Test cricket.

His dismissal patterns in the ongoing series - marked by hesitant footwork and lapses in judgment - have only reinforced these claims. Rohit's possible Test retirement would mirror R. Ashwin's mid-series exit and it might signify the beginning of a transition phase for Indian cricket.

As India enters the Sydney Test needing a win to keep their World Test Championship Final hopes alive, the stage is set for Rohit to silence his critics - or bow out gracefully. Whether he can reclaim his form or decide to step away, this Test may well define the conclusion of his red-ball career.
