Hattrick in Ranji Trophy: Shardul Thakur Becomes Fifth Mumbai Player to Take Three Wickets in a Row

By MyKhel Staff

Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur joined a unique list on Thursday (January 30) by claiming a hattrick of wickets during the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai.

With three wickets in three balls, Shardul became the fifth mumbai bowler to take a hattrick in the Ranji Trophy. This is the first for a Mumbai player since Royston Dias achieved the feat in the 2023/24 season against Bihar.

Shardul Thakur lets it rip against Meghalaya in Ranji Trophy

Opting to bowl first in their final group stage match, Lord Shardul provided the perfect start for Ajinkya Rahane's side by removing Meghalaya opener Nishanta Chakraborty in the very first over. While his new ball partner Mohit Avasthi also struck at the other end, Shardul went to claim the treble in the third over.

The right-arm pace bowling all-rounder started off his hattrick by castling Balchander Anirudh in the fourth delivery of the third over before removing Sumit Kumar for a golden duck, caught by Shams Mulani.

Shardul then completed his hat trick by cleaning up Jaskirat Singh for a golden duck in the final delivery of the very productive third over as he took his tally to four wickets and left Meghalaya reeling at 2/5 in 3 overs. Here is a look at the list of Ranji Trophy Hattricks for Mumbai:

Hattrick in Ranji Trophy for Mumbai (Bombay)

  • Jehangir Khot (Bombay) vs Baroda - Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai (1943-44)
  • Umesh Kulkarni (Bombay) vs Gujarat - Shastri Maidan in Anand (1963-64)
  • AM Ismail (Bombay) vs Saurashtra - Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai (1973-74)
  • Royston Dias (Mumbai) vs Bihar - Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna (2023-24)
  • Shardul Thakur (Mumbai) vs Meghalaya - BKC Ground in Mumbai (2024-25)

In fact Avasthi made it four wickets in a row for Mumbai following up on Thakur's hattrick with a wicket of his own in the first delivery of the fourth over as Meghalaya stared at posting one of the lowest totals in Ranji Trophy history.

Pringsang Sangma and skipper Akash Choudhary, however, helped Meghalaya from achieving the unwanted record as the pair took the team past the lowest total in Ranji Trophy - 25 All Out - and also past fifty.
