The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday (May 13) announced the latest winners of its Player of the Month awards for April 2024, spotlighting standout performances in the world of cricket.
West Indies captain Hayley Matthews and UAE opener Muhammad Waseem have been honoured with the women's and men's titles, respectively, following their exceptional contributions to their teams.

Matthews clinched her third ICC Women's Player of the Month award after leading the West Indies to success in Pakistan, excelling in both the One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) series.
Her all-around prowess was on full display as she amassed 451 runs and took 12 wickets over the month. The 26-year-old's performance included a staggering unbeaten 140 in the first ODI and consistent success across the series, culminating in a 4-1 T20I series victory for her team.
In her reaction to winning the award, Matthews expressed her delight and emphasized the importance of the team's success in Pakistan. Her focus now shifts to the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, with an eye on securing more points in the ICC Women's Championship.
On the men's side, Waseem made history by becoming the first UAE player to win the ICC Men's Player of the Month award. His vital role in the ACC Premier Cup saw him score 269 runs at an average of 44.83, including a rapid century in the final against Oman. Waseem's leadership and explosive batting were crucial in the UAE's triumph and qualification for next year's Asia Cup.
Waseem shared his excitement about the accolade, noting it as an honour and a significant motivation for players from emerging cricket nations. He highlighted his aim to continue leading by example, particularly in preparation for the Asia Cup.
The determination of the April winners was made through a combination of votes from registered fans on the ICC website and a specialist panel, including ICC Hall of Famers and media representatives.
Matthews and Waseem were selected from strong candidate lists, beating out notable players such as Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu and Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi for their respective awards.
These achievements not only highlight individual excellence but also underscore the vibrant and competitive spirit prevailing in international cricket, as players from various nations make their mark on the world stage.
