England Women's captain, Heather Knight, has expressed deep regret for a photograph from 2012 that surfaced on social media, leading to a reprimand and a suspended fine of £1,000 by the independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC).
In her statement, Knight apologized for her actions, acknowledging her lack of understanding at the time regarding the implications of her actions.

She emphasized her commitment to promoting inclusivity within cricket, ensuring that underrepresented groups have equal opportunities and experiences in the sport.
Richard Gould, the Chief Executive Officer of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), also commented on the matter, recognizing Knight's acknowledgement of her serious lapse in judgment over a decade ago.
Gould highlighted Knight's efforts as a public figure to encourage a more inclusive and equitable environment in cricket. He praised her for her initiatives to enhance diversity and her advocacy for marginalized communities, noting her role as a positive influence in the sport.
"I'm truly sorry for the mistake I made in 2012. It was wrong, and I have long regretted it. Back then, I simply was not as educated as to the implications and consequences of my actions as I have become since. There was no ill-intent meant.
"Whilst I can't change the past, I am passionate and committed to using my platform to promote inclusivity across the game ensuring underrepresented groups are afforded the same opportunities and fulfilment within the game as I have," said Knight, reflecting on her growth and dedication to making cricket more inclusive.
Gould further elaborated on the incident as a learning opportunity, underscoring the ECB's commitment to combating racism and discrimination. "Heather recognises this was a serious error of judgment which took place more than 10 years ago and has rightlyised. As a public figure and leader, Heather has worked tirelessly to foster a more inclusive and equitable future for cricket."
"She has championed initiatives to promote diversity and strongly advocated for marginalised communities. She has shown herself to be a positive role model. While we cannot change the past, we can certainly learn from it. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing work to combat racism and discrimination. We remain committed to fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and belonging for all," Gould stated, reaffirming the ECB's dedication to creating a respectful and inclusive cricket community.
This episode serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and acknowledging past errors while striving towards a more inclusive future in sports and beyond. Both Knight and Gould's statements highlight the ongoing journey towards inclusivity and the collective responsibility to promote equality and respect in cricket.
