Akash Deep's ten-wicket haul at Edgbaston may have stolen the headlines, but behind his match-winning performance lies a story of quiet perseverance and extraordinary grit.
The 28-year-old pacer, originally from Bihar and representing Bengal in domestic cricket, played a pivotal role in India's 336-run demolition of England in the second Test - a performance that has all but cemented his spot for the third Test at Lord's.

But Akash Deep's journey to the top hasn't been a smooth ride. Former Bengal coach Arun Lal recently shed light on the struggles the pacer endured in his early days, particularly during his stay at the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) dormitory.
"He used to live in this dormitory of CAB, which was a hellhole. Now, I'm sure it's better, but he never once said that, you know, sir, that you should put the food there or the food is not, you know, in the canteen, and I am having this problem," Lal told Sports Now. "Not once did I hear any complaint in three years, four years. It was unbelievable.
"I was aghast when I went and saw the dormitory. You know, it was unbearable. It was a bloody hellhole. I thought people would die of disease there."
Despite these harsh conditions, Akash Deep's discipline and hunger for improvement never wavered. Lal recalled being immediately impressed by his potential.
"I was part of the Bengal team, and Akash was amongst the probables. When I saw him, I thought he was absolute gold. There's no question about it," he said. "He had pace, he had stamina, he had strength, and most important thing I found in this young man was that he never complained about anything."
Lal also highlighted Akash's incredible fitness and determination. "He was always a strong lad, much stronger than all his peers in the Bengal team, and he still is. His work ethic is beyond belief," he said, recalling how Akash used to train by running up and down a jungle-clad hill in his village.
From battling poor living conditions to becoming a Test match hero, Akash Deep's journey is a testament to silent resilience and relentless pursuit of excellence.
