When Chepauk Became Witness To India's Maiden Test Win in 1952: Remembering A Triumph That Ushered New Era for Indian Cricket

As India are set to begin their campaign at home with the two-match series against Bangladesh, the Rohit Sharma-led side begin as favourites despite the visitors' latest heroics in Pakistan.

In the first fifty years of international cricket, India were one of the weaker teams where they struggled to dictate terms and often fell prey to the opposition's trap. After nearly two decades of struggle, there was eventually a light at the end of the tunnel.

When Chepauk Became Witness To India s Maiden Test Win in 1952

From their debut in 1932, India had to wait until 1952, for their first Test victory. It was a significant moment for India on February 10, 1952, when they opened their account in Test cricket with a win over England at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Madras (now Chennai).

The Indians who were part of the Test couldn't be any happier upon clinching their first-ever Test victory against a team that was one of the formidable forces at that time. It was the kind of triumph that would go on to inspire generations of cricketers in India.

India showed the world they were prepared to stand tall on the international stage. Taking a trip down memory lane, the five-day battle kicked off on February 6, with India led by Vijay Hazare. On the other hand, England, led by Donald Carr, posed quite a tough challenge with their experience and strong lineup.

The Indian cricket team who were denied a win in previous encounters, were curious to make history on home soil. India's bowling attack, spearheaded by Vinoo Mankad, played a quintessential role in this historic win. Mankad's spell was nothing short of a marvel as he took 8/55 in the first innings and followed it up with 4/53 in the second innings.

Thanks to his masterful bowling spell, which helped the team dismantle England’s batting lineup like a hot knife through butter as the Three Lions were bowled out for 266 in the first innings. Overall, Mankad ended the match with impressive bowling figures of 12/108.

On the other hand, India responded with 457/9 (declared), with the help of Pankaj Roy and Polly Umrigar as the duo scored a century apiece. England were bowled out for 183 in the second innings as India won the Test by an innings and 8 runs, which sent Chepauk into a frenzy. It was that historic win that marked the start of a new era for Indian cricket, which paved the way for India to evolve into one of the cricketing giants.
