Australia confirmed their spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final with a commanding six-wicket victory over India in the fifth Test in Sydney. This win secured a 3-1 series triumph and marked their first Test series victory against India since 2014-15.
The Aussies are now set to face South Africa in the WTC final at Lord's in June, as South Africa had already clinched their place with a close win against Pakistan in the Boxing Day Test at Centurion.

Currently, Australia lead the WTC standings with a points percentage of 63.73, well ahead of other teams like Pakistan, West Indies, and Sri Lanka. Even if Sri Lanka win their upcoming series against Australia 2-0, their points percentage would only rise to 53.85, while Australia's would drop to 57.02-still enough for them to retain their spot.
The only scenario that could cost their place is if they incur penalty points for a slow over rate. For example, an eight-point deduction combined with Sri Lanka sweeping the series 2-0 would allow the Lankan Lions to overtake them. While this is unlikely, there is precedent-Australia lost 10 points for slow over rates during the 2023 Ashes, and England and Pakistan faced similar penalties in recent series.
Australia avoided any penalties in the Sydney Test, where they bowled India out in under 80 overs in both innings. However, the upcoming Sri Lanka series could be challenging due to spin-friendly conditions and potential long fielding sessions, as seen during their last tour when Dinesh Chandimal's double century forced them to bowl 181 overs.
Although the Pat Cummins-led side is in a strong position, they must remain disciplined with over-rate management during the Sri Lanka series to avoid jeopardizing their spot in the WTC final at Lord's.
This is Australia's second consecutive WTC Final and they would definitely be looking to make it two in two.
