The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced a major setback in their IPL 2025 playoff push after their crucial match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) was washed out.
With just 6 points from 8 games, the margin for error has now shrunk dramatically. KKR must dig deep and produce a near-perfect finish to the league phase if they hope to stay alive in the playoff race.

After the rain-affected no-result against PBKS, KKR's playoff qualification probability now hovers between 58% to 62%. They currently sit precariously on 6 points with only 5 games left to play. To enter the "safe zone" of 14-16 points - typically enough to make the top 4 - they must win at least 4 out of their remaining 5 matches.
However, the challenge is steep. Since the departure of mentor Gautam Gambhir, KKR's form has dipped, and key players like Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russell, and Venkatesh Iyer, Sunil Narine have struggled for consistency.
The path ahead for KKR is tricky. They must especially focus on beating direct rivals like Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who are also in contention for playoff spots. Every match now is effectively a knockout game.
| Scenario | Final Points | Qualification Chance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Win all 5 matches | 17 points | 97% | Almost certain qualification |
| Win 4 out of 5 | 15 points | 70% | NRR becomes crucial; could depend on other teams' results |
| Win 3 out of 5 | 14 points | 20% | Very slim chance; needs huge NRR boost and multiple results going their way |
| Win 2 or fewer matches | 9-11 points | Almost eliminated | Very unlikely to progress |
Currently, KKR's Net Run Rate (+0.212) is healthy compared to many mid-table teams. If they can maintain or improve it while winning matches, it could prove decisive, especially if multiple teams finish around the 14-point mark. Heavy wins against teams like Delhi, Bengaluru, and other mid-table opponents will not only boost their points but also their NRR.
KKR had an opportunity to make a statement against PBKS on 26th April, Saturday. After being asked to chase 202 - thanks to blistering knocks from Priyansh Arya (69 off 35) and Prabhsimran Singh (83 off 49) - KKR were 7/0 after the first over when rain and severe winds disrupted proceedings. Despite valiant efforts by groundstaff, conditions worsened, and the match was eventually called off at 22:58 local time.
The washout cost KKR what could have been two crucial points - either from a possible win or at least a strong fight that could improve their momentum.
