How Delhi Daredevils Missed Virat Kohli: IPL 2008 Draft Blunder which made Kohli RCB's Boy
In February 2008, as the Indian Premier League prepared for its explosive debut, India’s Under-19 team had just conquered the World Cup in Malaysia.
Leading them from the front was a 19-year-old Delhi boy named Virat Kohli - fiery, fearless, and already a Ranji Trophy player. Local franchise Delhi Daredevils seemed destined to snap him up. They had publicly identified Kohli, left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan, and Tanmay Srivastava as their under-22 targets.

But fate, and a peculiar draft system, intervened. In mid-March, ahead of the main player auction, franchises held a special U-19 draft to fulfil mandatory under-22 and catchment-area quotas. Salaries were capped: $30,000 base, or $50,000 maximum for players with first-class experience. A random draw decided the order. Delhi’s name came out first. A collective groan echoed across the room, Kohli, the U-19 captain and local star, was surely theirs.
Instead, Delhi huddled. Captain Virender Sehwag, their icon player, and management decided their batting was already overloaded with stars like Gautam Gambhir, AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan, and Shikhar Dhawan. They needed bowling variety. Sangwan, another Delhi lad from Najafgarh who had troubled Sehwag in nets and shone in the U-19 final, was their choice. Delhi paid the top $50,000 bracket.
Royal Challengers Bangalore, picking second, didn’t hesitate. “Virat Kohli, thank you,” came their instant reply, according to then-CEO Charu Sharma. Kohli went for a mere $30,000.
The aftermath defined IPL history. Kohli exploded into a global superstar at RCB, scoring over 8,000 runs across 17+ seasons, never leaving the franchise despite mega-auctions. He became their soul—loyal, record-breaking, and synonymous with the team. Sangwan enjoyed a modest start (15 wickets in 2009) but faded, later hit by a doping ban. Delhi Daredevils—later Capitals—have chased their first IPL title in vain for 18 years.
Sehwag later explained it was pure team balance: “We lacked a bowler.” Yet the decision remains IPL’s biggest “what if.” A Delhi boy slipped away for pocket change, turning one franchise’s regret into another’s legend. In the high-stakes world of T20 cricket, sometimes the cheapest pick becomes priceless.
