How Rohit Sharma's Trust with Gambhir-Agarkar Eroded Over The Last Two Years
As India prepare for the decisive third ODI against England at Lord's on Sunday, speculation is mounting that it could mark the end of Rohit Sharma's illustrious international career.
The 39-year-old opener, a cornerstone of India's white-ball success, faces an uncertain future amid the BCCI's push towards a younger squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Sources indicate that the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, and head coach Gautam Gambhir have conveyed to Rohit that he is not central to their long-term plans. The focus is shifting towards promising talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been earmarked for a prominent role in the ODI setup. Rohit's parents' presence in London has further fuelled retirement chatter.
Rohit, who has accumulated over 11,700 ODI runs with a record three double centuries, retired from Tests in May 2025 and T20Is after the 2024 World Cup triumph. He led India to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy, yet his removal as ODI captain shortly afterwards reportedly strained relations with the management. Conflicting accounts have emerged over selections and communication, particularly during the Australia tour and England Test series planning.
The relationship between Rohit, Gambhir, and Agarkar has been described as lacking mutual trust, contrasting with the stability provided by former coach Rahul Dravid. While Rohit has earned the right to decide his exit after 513 international matches and 50 centuries, selectors maintain their duty to build a title-contending team 15 months out from the World Cup.
Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir - The Team India Dynamic
Interestingly, when Kolkata Knight Riders travelled to Mumbai Indians during IPL 2024, Gambhir had emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Dravid as India's head coach. According to someone close to Rohit, it was the former India captain himself who initiated the conversation.
"Gauti bhai Indian team mein aa jaao."
Gambhir is believed to have replied: "If you remain captain, I will definitely join."
Not everyone around Rohit shared the same optimism. Some reportedly cautioned him about the transition from Dravid's player-friendly approach to Gambhir's stronger leadership style.
One individual is said to have asked: "You are so used to Rahul Dravid school of man management. This will be a different challenge. Are you up for it?"
Those concerns gained momentum after India's 0-3 home Test series defeat to New Zealand, with the subsequent Australia tour reportedly exposing deeper cracks in the relationship.
The Weakening Relationship
On January 2, a day before the Sydney Test, Rohit spent considerable time in discussion with Gambhir and Agarkar during the team's training session at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Sources close to the selection committee claim Agarkar advised Rohit against voluntarily sitting out of the match despite his poor form, warning that such a decision could complicate his chances of being selected for the England Test series later that year.
According to those sources, Rohit had been contemplating immediate Test retirement.
However, instead of making an announcement, he addressed the broadcasters and famously said:
"I am a father of two. I know what is good for me."
The remark reportedly surprised both Gambhir and Agarkar, further weakening an already fragile relationship.
The ODI Captaincy Taken
If there was one decision that completely damaged Rohit's confidence in the leadership group, it was losing the ODI captaincy despite leading India to the Champions Trophy title.
The removal came before India's very next ODI assignment, nearly seven months after lifting the ICC trophy. With no 50-over fixtures scheduled immediately after the IPL, Rohit also had little opportunity to build rhythm before the decision was taken.
When Agarkar conveyed that the management was planning with the 2027 World Cup in mind, the conversations were reportedly difficult. Both the chairman of selectors and Gambhir are understood to have shared the same vision regarding the transition.
From that point onwards, Rohit's focus reportedly remained fixed on playing one final ODI World Cup, while the selectors remained non-committal about his future.
Rohit has shown glimpses of his class in recent ODIs, but limited 50-over opportunities and fitness considerations at his age have complicated his case. Shubman Gill now leads the side, with senior players like Virat Kohli still in the mix.
