How Shardul Thakur's Gift Brought Rohit Sharma's ODI Career Back on Track

The game of cricket often produces stories that sound straight out of a movie script. Recently, at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground in London, Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma played a masterful innings that silenced his critics and put an end to swirling rumours about his retirement.

But the most heartwarming part of his sensational century was a secret weapon gifted by his childhood friend and Mumbai teammate, Shardul Thakur.

How Shardul Thakur s Gift Brought Rohit Sharma s ODI Career Back on Track

Going into the third and deciding ODI against England, the 39-year-old veteran was under immense pressure. There were widespread reports suggesting that Rohit had been informed by the selectors that he did not fit into their future plans, sparking intense speculation that his days in international cricket were numbered. He had also failed to register a fifty-plus score in his previous eight ODI innings.

With India facing a massive target of 388 runs set by the English side, it was a must-win situation. Rising to the occasion, Rohit silenced the noise in style.

Taking the attack to the England bowlers, Rohit smashed his 34th ODI century, amassing a brilliant 138 runs off just 110 deliveries. In doing so, he broke Sourav Ganguly's previous record of 90 to become the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at Lord's Cricket Ground. It also marked his eighth ODI hundred in England, the most by any visiting batter in a single country.

His innings, which featured 17 boundaries and 5 massive sixes, helped him reach the three-figure mark in just 84 balls. He also had a brilliant 147-run opening stand with Shubman Gill, which was one of his finest knocks in recent years, was unfortunately not enough to win the match. India finished at 360 for 7, falling short by 27 runs and losing the series 2-1 to the hosts.

The Story Behind the Bat

Following the match, an interesting revelation caught the attention of fans on social media. The bat Rohit used to conquer the English bowling attack actually belonged to Shardul Thakur, affectionately known among fans as 'Lord Shardul'. Viewers noticed Thakur's name embossed near the bottom of the bat.

Speaking to the media, Shardul shared the story behind the willow. "I am signed with SS bats and Jatin Sareen (the owner) has been very kind to send me some excellent pieces of willows. Rohit once requested me to give him a couple of bats since he loved them," Shardul explained.

The friendship of the two cricketers go a long way back. Shardul was Rohit's junior in school, and they shared the dressing room for the Mumbai domestic team long before they played together for India and the Mumbai Indians.

"We all love him and he's given us so many joyful moments in the game of cricket that denying him the bats was out of question. And today I am really happy that he scored his historic hundred at Lord's Cricket Ground using one of my bats," Shardul added.

However, in a sport driven by fierce competition and immense pressure, Rohit Sharma proved his worth with his sheer class and determination. And a small piece of the credit will always go to Shardul Thakur, who gladly shared his finest bat to help keep his friend's glorious international career alive.
