The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled the updated central contracts for the 2023-24 cricket season, retaining Grade A+ contracts for India captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja.
This announcement comes with the inclusion of 30 players in total, marking an increase from the previous season. However, amidst these updates, notable exclusions include Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, who were part of the World Cup 2023 squad but have not been awarded central contracts.

The absence of Iyer and Kishan from the central contracts list has sparked discussions, especially considering their recent actions, such as not participating in the Ranji Trophy, which reportedly displeased the BCCI.
Kishan, taking a break for mental health reasons, did not play for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy but participated in the DY Patil T20 Cup. Meanwhile, Iyer, after playing the first two Tests against England, withdrew due to a back injury.
His omission is speculated to be due to poor performance, despite a strong showing at the World Cup 2023 where he scored 530 runs.
Previously, Iyer was included in Grade B, and Kishan was part of Grade C in the BCCI contracts. Their future now hinges on their performance in domestic cricket and the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), which could influence their selection for the T20 World Cup in June.

Amid this massive blow, there have been questions about the future of the Indian duo in international cricket. Both Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are young and thus the normal doubt is rising if it is the end of the road for them.
Despite the current setbacks, there is optimism about the future prospects of both Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan within the Indian cricket team. Their potential reintegration into the team depends on their form and performance, underscoring the notion that a central contract is not the sole determinant of their career path.
The emphasis has to be on the mentality, in line with the BCCI's standards and expectations for professional conduct. The BCCI has made it clear that adherence to domestic cricket commitments is crucial, sending a message to both players about their conduct and expectations moving forward.
If Shreyas and Ishan can perform regularly in domestic cricket, they can definitely wear the prestigious India shirt again in the near future.
