Suryakumar Yadav has posted an 80 per cent win rate as India’s T20 captain. The figure came soon after India defended the T20 World Cup title.
The Mumbaikar took over the captaincy in 2024, soon after Rohit Sharma led India to their second T20 World triumph in the West Indies. Since then, India played 52 matches and won 42 of them.

The Mumbai batter linked the milestone to a long-running personal joke. Suryakumar said academic scores never reached that level. "I feel that the percentage I tried to achieve in school and college by studying, Im getting that today in cricket here,\" Suryakumar said while reflecting on the record.
The two-time T20 world champions won 42 of 52 matches under Suryakumar. That works out to an 80 per cent success rate. Suryakumar said the number felt satisfying to hear. The batter also suggested the team focus stayed on results, not records.
"There in school or college, I could never cross 50-60 per cent. But definitely, it feels good to hear this 80 per cent winning rate here. Although, I dont pay much attention to stats. But nobody likes to lose in any game. I also love winning all the games," Suryakumar said to PTI.
Suryakumar spoke about family backing during the early years. Suryakumar’s father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, worked as an Electrical Engineer. Ashok Kumar Yadav served at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre BARC. Suryakumar said studies never held the same pull as cricket.
"...my family tried a lot to educate me first....but in a short time they got the idea that this boy is not interested in studies. Ye ladka haath mein nahi aayega this boy cant be controlled," Suryakumar recalled about that phase at home.
Suryakumar said the support shifted firmly towards sport once interest became clear. "But their support was always there in sports because they could see that I was enjoying it, I liked playing. So they said, Okay, go play. If nothing happens later, then we are here to take care of it," Suryakumar said.
The Chembur-based batter added that the family’s safety net stayed in place. Suryakumar then ensured cricket became the main career path. The 80 per cent win rate now sits as a key marker of Suryakumar’s results as India’s T20 captain.
