Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been at the heart of India's recent ICC successes. His pivotal role in India's T20 World Cup victory last year marked a defining moment in his career-one that, in his own words, lifted "a huge burden off [his] shoulders."
Now, as he prepares for the upcoming Champions Trophy starting February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE, Hardik opens up about the pressures, defining moments, and emotional relief that followed his World Cup triumph.

Hardik candidly acknowledged the immense pressure that comes with representing India on the global stage. "There's always pressure in ICC tournaments. It's about who handles it better," he told Jagran. But for Hardik, the burden wasn't just about performance-it was about living up to the expectations of 1.4 billion people.
"I don't play for myself; I play for India. When we won the T20 World Cup, it felt like a huge burden was lifted off my shoulders. The weight of expectations, the scrutiny, the personal challenges-it all faded in that one moment," he shared.
Recalling India's thrilling victory against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Hardik described how the atmosphere tested even the most seasoned players.
"When I walked onto the field, the energy from the fans were overwhelming. Despite having played many matches, that environment was different. It wasn't just a game; it was an emotional battlefield. But handling that pressure helped me grow," he said.
Hardik's performance in the match, especially during the critical 14th over, was a testament to his ability to thrive under pressure. "I knew we needed wickets. I focused on sticking to my strengths-good lines and lengths. That clarity of thought is what helps in high-pressure situations," he explained.
Speaking about Virat Kohli's iconic six off Haris Rauf in the same match, Hardik reflected on how such moments can change not just a game but also the mental dynamics of a team.
"That shot was more than just six runs; it was a statement. It felt like a part of the pressure we'd been carrying shifted away in that moment. It gave us the belief that we could pull off the impossible," Hardik recalled.
Hardik's defining moment came in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados, where his dismissal of Heinrich Klaasen turned the tide in India's favor.
"Rohit Sharma and I have played together for years, and he knows how I think. Just before the delivery, I told him I'd bowl wide to Klaasen. It was a calculated risk, and when it worked, it felt like a validation of all the hard work and mental battles I'd fought," he said.
Bowling the final over, with India's hopes resting on his shoulders, Hardik stayed calm under pressure. "I've always wanted to be in that position-to bowl the final over or hit the winning runs. When we won, it wasn't just about the trophy. It felt like years of carrying the weight of expectations had finally paid off. A huge burden was lifted."
Hardik also reflected on the dramatic catch taken by Suryakumar Yadav to dismiss David Miller in the final over.
"When Miller hit that shot, for a moment, it felt like the match could slip away. But Surya's composure was incredible. It was the final piece of the puzzle, and when that catch was taken, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief. It was done-we'd conquered the pressure," he said.
For Hardik, the World Cup win wasn't just about adding another trophy to India's cabinet; it was about personal redemption.
"I've been through injuries, setbacks, and criticism. But standing there, holding that trophy, it felt like all of that had a purpose. The burden of expectations was heavy, but that victory lightened it. I'm proud of how I stood tall through it all," he said.
As Hardik gears up for the much-awaited Champions Trophy, his journey is a testament to resilience, mental strength, and the power of belief. The burden may have been lifted, but his hunger for success remains as fierce as ever.
