I am a Mark Waugh fan, was 'crazy' about him as a kid: Murali Vijay

Pune, April 15: India's Test opener Murali Vijay has revealed that as a kid he was "crazy" about Australian batsman Mark Waugh.

IPL 2015 Special; Points Table

Vijay, who is currently playing for Kings XI Punjab in the ongoing 8th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL 8) said he is a fan of Waugh besides liking Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag when it comes to opening batsmen.

The Tamil Nadu right-hander, speaking to IPL's official website, said he liked everything about Waugh.

Waugh, the younger twin brother of Steve, was one of the most elegant batsmen. He played 128 Tests for Australia scoring 8,029 runs with 20 hundreds. In 244 ODIs, he accumulated 8,500 runs with 18 tons.

The 49-year-old is now a TV commentator. He retired from the game in 2002. "I always liked Mark Waugh. I am a Mark Waugh fan. I was crazy about him when I was a kid. I don't know why, but I liked the way he carried himself in the field, the way he was and everything about him," Vijay told IPLT20.com.

"And obviously in India I like Sachin (Tendulkar), no doubt about it. I like Viru pa (Virender Sehwag) and now I like the way I play," he added.

Vijay, 31, explained how exciting it was for him to open the batting for Punjab with Sehwag.

"It is always exciting (to open with Sehwag). I have been part of the Indian team when he was playing but I did not get an opportunity to open with him at that time.

"But now I have the opportunity to open with him; he plays the way he wants to and it is such a nice sight to be standing at the non-striker's end and see him play fearlessly and with freedom. He is a good character too; it is fun to play with him," he said.

Punjab will face Delhi Daredevils in Match 10 of IPL 2015 today in Pune.
