Bengaluru, July 23: World Cup winning England skipper Heather Knight on Sunday (July 23) said she was proud of the team that won the match from a tough situation.

"I can't stop smiling. I am so proud of this group of girls. We made it hard for ourselves but I couldn't care less," said Knight.

"We won tight games and that was something we wanted to work on. Back in Delhi (when England lost the World Twenty20) was a long time ago but it was the making of this team. Anya Shrubsole - what a hero," she said.

Knight said England did not lose hope when India were batting fine through Punam Raut. "India were batting brilliantly and put good partnerships together. We knew if we hung in and kept the rate at five or six then we would always be in the game and we held out nerve."

She hoped women's cricket will get a lease of life with this tournament. "What a tournament it has been. The support, the cricket and everything about it. Hopefully, this can be a springboard for women's cricket in this country and around the world."

England's wicketkeeper batsman Sarah Taylor too was chuffed. "I am so proud of the girls. We knew if we stuck in the game and built dots and pressure we would get there.

"It has been a been rollercoaster for myself. To be part of this team is incredible. It was a case of getting healthy and to be part of something. It was pot luck to be back for this World Cup. "
