Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has played down suggestions that the current Indian men's team is the greatest T20 side ever, stating that dominance in modern cricket depends on adaptability rather than reputation.

Speaking during the Delhi Capitals press conference, Axar addressed questions about India's recent success and whether the team deserves to be labelled the best T20 side in history. While acknowledging India's strong performances, he stressed that maintaining dominance requires evolving with changing conditions and formats.
Responding to whether India's current side could be considered the greatest T20 team, Axar highlighted the importance of consistency and adapting to changing circumstances.
"I think it started from 2022, and the journey really began from there. Certain tough decisions were taken, and we started playing that particular brand of cricket. If you want to dominate, you have to continue playing that same brand of cricket."
He also pointed out that teams must evolve based on changing match situations and playing conditions.
"With time, you eventually have to change as well. You have to look at what kind of cricket is being played, what kind of pitches you are getting, and what is happening around you. You have to plan accordingly, and that is what we are doing right now. That is why we are dominating."
Axar suggested that long-term success depends on the ability to adapt rather than relying solely on past achievements.
While India's performances have earned widespread praise, Axar said he does not believe in labelling teams as the greatest, noting that success in cricket often comes in phases.
"As you mentioned, people are calling this team the best or the greatest, but I don't believe too much in that."
He emphasised that every team at the international level consists of top-quality players, making comparisons difficult across different eras.
"I feel that every team that plays at the international level is made up of the best players. It is often about a particular phase or era when a team is doing well. When the right combination settles, it looks like everything is working perfectly."
Axar also warned against complacency, stressing that even strong teams can have difficult days.
"In cricket, it is never guaranteed that you will always perform well. On any given day, we can also play badly. A bad phase or a bad match can happen to anyone."
Despite rejecting the "greatest team" label, Axar acknowledged that India are currently playing strong cricket and maintaining consistent results.
"But yes, definitely we are dominating and playing good cricket. Because of that, we will be able to continue performing consistently."
With major ICC events scheduled over the next few years, India's ability to sustain momentum will depend on maintaining form, adapting strategies, and continuing to evolve with the demands of modern T20 cricket.
