“I Don’t Care If I Die, I Want That...”: Yuvraj Singh Gets Real on Cancer and Cricket
Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has opened up about the moment he was diagnosed with cancer, recalling how his focus at the time remained firmly on securing a long-awaited place in India's Test side. The 2011 World Cup hero revealed that he learned about the illness while in Delhi, just as an opportunity opened in the Test team following Sourav Ganguly's retirement.
Yuvraj said the chance to finally establish himself in Test cricket after years of waiting overshadowed concerns about his health. Having spent nearly seven years pushing for a regular Test spot, he admitted that his immediate reaction reflected the mindset of a professional athlete determined to represent India at the highest level.

### Diagnosis Came Amid Career Opportunity
Speaking about that period, Yuvraj described how doctors delivered a stark warning regarding the severity of his condition. Medical examinations revealed a tumour positioned between his heart and lungs, later diagnosed as mediastinal seminoma, a rare form of germ cell cancer.
Doctors advised immediate chemotherapy, warning that continuing to play could pose life-threatening risks. He was told that without treatment, his life expectancy could be limited to three to six months. Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Yuvraj initially remained focused on continuing his cricket commitments.
### Playing Through Symptoms During World Cup Run
Yuvraj's illness gained attention after India's victorious 2011 ODI World Cup campaign, where he delivered one of the most influential all-round performances in the tournament. Despite symptoms that included persistent coughing, fatigue, and episodes of vomiting blood, he continued to play and was eventually named Player of the Tournament.
His performances during the tournament became a defining chapter in India's World Cup history, with crucial contributions in both batting and bowling phases across the knockout stages. The physical toll of the illness, however, became increasingly difficult to ignore in the months that followed.
### Treatment, Recovery, and Return to Cricket
Following the World Cup, Yuvraj travelled to the United States for treatment and underwent chemotherapy under specialist care. He completed three cycles of chemotherapy and was declared cancer-free in March 2012.
He returned to international cricket later that year, making his comeback in a T20I against New Zealand in September 2012. Yuvraj continued to represent India across formats until 2017 and remained active in the Indian Premier League until announcing his retirement in 2019.
### Legacy Beyond the Field
In the years following his recovery, Yuvraj established the YouWeCan Foundation to support cancer awareness, early detection, and treatment assistance for patients across India. His journey through illness and recovery also formed the basis of his autobiography, *The Test of My Life*.
His story remains one of the most documented examples of resilience in Indian cricket, highlighting the challenges elite athletes face beyond the field and the determination required to return to competitive sport after major health setbacks.
