I had almost quit cricket: Railways' Sagar Mishra

Bengaluru, Dec 3: Railways' cricketer Sagar Mishra created on Tuesday, November 30 as he had hit six sixes in six balls during Times Shield 'B' Division match against RCF.

Since then, He has been the center of attraction of media as well as the cricket fraternity in Mumbai. Sagar who was representing Railways struck a cracking 91 off only 46 balls. His sixes came against RCF's off-spinner Tushar Kamarek.

But nobody knew that the 23-year old batsman did not have money to buy a bat due to poverty! A resident of Ulhasnagar, he is the sole bread earner in his family. They run a small grocery shop!

Mishra, speaking from Mumbai over the phone said: “Recently I had almost quit the game as I did not have the least amount of money to buy bat and other kits to play the game.

"And in a bid to overcome the struggle with poverty I was compelled to join Railways as the fourth class staff.

"And I have been posted in Baroda! Every day I travel from Mumbai to Baroda and come back, almost an 11-hour journey. Still, I am doing that to survive my cricket."

When asked about his feelings after having hit six sixes in that particular over he said: “Actually after I hit first three sixes, there was a lot of chants from our reserve bench I could touch Yuvraj Singh's feat of hitting six sixes if I had tried. Having heard that chant from my teammates I thought let us try."

Dinesh Lad, the coach of Railways who trained Rohit Sharma was also elated with Sagar's stormy innings.

He said: “Everybody is talking about Sagar's six sixes. But I was delighted to have seen that he played the incredible innings even with a muscle-strain. That was the key point that he showed character."
