'He's a Good Candidate' - Sourav Ganguly backs Gautam Gambhir to be next India Head Coach

By MyKhel Staff

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has voiced his full support behind an Indian coach as Rahul Dravid's successor and says he would be happy to see Gautam Gambhir as the next head coach.

Rahul Dravid's tenure as India coach is set to expire after the T20 World Cup. BCCI has already asked for applications for the head coach job and many former India cricketers have applied for it.

As per reports, Gautam Gambhir is a frontrunner for the job. The former batter has honed his skills in the IPL and did his magic with Kolkata Knight Riders as their mentor in the IPL 2024. KKR ended their decade-long trophy drought and Gambhir was an instrumental figure behind it.

Amid widespread speculations about foreign coaches, Ganguly believes an Indian coach will be the right person to take over Dravid's role.

"I am in favour of an Indian coach because we have enormous talent in our country, enormously high-skilled players who have done wonders for Indian cricket and very rightfully they should be a part of the system," Ganguly was quoted as saying by News18.

Ganguly is not sure about whether Gambhir applied for the job, but said that he would be elated if the southpaw is chosen to be the next head sir of the Indian team. Ganguly reckoned that the Delhi-born is a good candidate for the coaching role.

"If Gambhir applies - you can see it on TV - he worked for KKR this year. I was with Delhi (Capitals), you can see the hunger, the passion and the want to win and I will be happy if he applies and if the board decides to give him the job, I think he is a good candidate," Ganguly added.

Team India is currently in USA participating in the T20 World Cup 2024. They have been slotted in Group A along with Ireland, USA, Canada and Pakistan. The first match for the Indian team will be on June 5 against Ireland.
