Christchurch/Melbourne, Feb 14: A hat-trick, two 300 plus scores, a individual hundred, two five-wicket hauls. Plenty happened on the first day of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 on Saturday.
Cricket's biggest spectacle was unveiled at Hagley Oval in Christchurch and co-host New Zealand hammered Sri Lanka by 98 runs. Australia too secured a big win over England at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) today.
Here are the highlights from the opening day of World Cup, from both Pool A matches
# New Zealand scored 331/6 in 50 overs and later restricted Sri Lanka to 233 all out to win by in the opening game of the tournament
# Australia went further than their neighbours and in 50 overs against England at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). They bowled out England for 231 to win by 111 runs
# There were 4 half centuries in this game (3 from New Zealand and 1 Sri Lankan)
# Jeevan Mendis took 2 wickets in 2 balls for Sri Lanka
# England paceman Steven Finn took a hat-trick (Brad Haddin, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson) in the 50th over of Australia innings
# Aaron Finch (135) hit the first century of this World Cup. This was after he had a reprieve on 0 by Chris Woakes off James Anderson
# There were only 2 sixes (New Zealand) in the 1st match
# Lasith Malinga had a forgettable game with 0/84 in 10 overs
