ICC to Unveil ODI World Cup 2027 as Date Revealed: New Format, Teams, Super 7 Explained

The countdown to the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will enter a decisive phase on October 1, with the ICC and Cricket South Africa (CSA) set to unveil the tournament schedule in Cape Town. The event will also mark the opening of the ticket-registration process, giving fans an opportunity to register for the ticket ballot.

The tournament, which returns to Africa for the first time since 2003, will be staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Twelve venues across the three countries have already been confirmed - eight in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe and one in Namibia.

The 2027 edition will also mark the return of a 14-team World Cup, with the ICC introducing a significantly different competition structure from the previous two editions. The tournament is expected to run from October to November 2027, with the final scheduled for November 21.

India among teams in line for direct qualification

The qualification race will be settled using the ICC ODI rankings, alongside the host nations and teams emerging from the qualification pathway.

South Africa and Zimbabwe are assured of their places as hosts, while eight other teams will qualify directly through the ODI rankings. The remaining four spots will be filled through the World Cup Qualifier.

India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh were in the automatic qualification positions based on the rankings cited in the report. Bangladesh's position is particularly significant because South Africa, ranked higher, already enter as hosts.

The qualification picture is therefore not merely about rankings; the host allocation directly affects which teams make the cut.

West Indies face qualification route

One of the notable names currently outside the automatic qualification places is the West Indies. The two-time World Cup champions will need to navigate the qualification pathway to secure a place at the 2027 tournament.

The ICC's qualification system has been designed to provide a route for teams beyond the established full members. The World Cup Qualifier will eventually determine the four remaining participants.

A radically different World Cup format

The 2027 tournament will introduce a new format designed to create meaningful matches throughout the competition.

The 14 qualified teams will first be ranked, with the three lowest-ranked sides entering a preliminary Super Series. These three teams will play each other in a round-robin competition, with only the top side advancing to the next stage.

The second stage will feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six. Each group will play a round-robin schedule, producing 30 matches in total.

The top three teams from each group will advance, along with the next best-placed team across the two groups, creating a seven-team field for the next phase.

Super 7 to decide semi-finalists

The seven remaining teams will then enter the Super 7 stage, where they will play a round-robin competition comprising 21 matches.

The top four teams at the end of this phase will qualify for the semi-finals. The semi-final structure will see the first-placed team play fourth, while the second-placed team faces third. The two winners will then meet in the final for the World Cup trophy.

The format is a significant departure from the 2023 World Cup, when 10 teams played a single round-robin league before the semi-finals and final.

ICC World Cup 2027: Tickets and countdown begin

Alongside the schedule announcement, the ICC and CSA will launch the ticket ballot registration on October 1. Fans will not immediately purchase tickets; instead, they will first register their interest through the ballot process.

With the schedule set to be unveiled exactly one year before the tournament's planned opening, October 1 will effectively begin the final countdown to what will be the 14th edition of the men's ODI World Cup and the first to be hosted across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
