ICC World Cup 2023: From Dharamshala to Chennai - How much distance Indian Cricket Team will travel?

Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh - this is how this country is roughly estimated by the length and breadth. As the ICC World Cup 2023 juggernaut arrives in India after twelve years, the whole country is set to be in a frenzy in a few days' time.

The Indian cricket team will be playing across the country in the World Cup 2023. All the teams are set to play nine matches in the group stages, and for that, the teams will be traversing almost the entire nation.

Considering the warm-up venues, there are 12 stadiums which will host the World Cup matches. The cities are - Thiruvananthapuram (warmup), Guwahati (warmup), Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Delhi and Dharamshala. India won't play a game in Hyderabad.

India will have their two warm-up matches in Guwahati and Trivandrum, which are at two opposite corners of the country. Then they will start the campaign against Australia (Oct 8) in Chennai. Then they play against Afghanistan (Oct 11) in three days' time in Delhi.

India's high-stakes clash against Pakistan (Oct 14) is next, which will require them to move again at the Western part of the country from the capital. Then there will be a four-day gap as India take on Bangladesh on October 19 in Pune, which will be a relatively short journey. India face New Zealand (Oct 22) in Dharamshala after that.

The Indian team will then have a breather of a week as the next match against England in Lucknow. And finally, as November comes, the hosts will lock horns against Sri Lanka (Nov 2), South Africa (Nov 5) and Netherlands (Nov 12) - which will be played in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru respectively.

If India qualify for the semifinals and the Final, then the Indian team will have to travel to Mumbai/Kolkata, and then again to Ahmedabad for the Final.

India Travelling in World Cup 2023

  • In total, the Indian team will travel a total of at least 12,897 kms if they were travelling by road till the group stages of World Cup 2023. In terms of the nautical miles, the distance is 6,965 nautical miles, the unit which is used to measure the distance on air.

  • This travelling distance will increase further if India qualifies for the semifinals and Finals. Based on that, if India play their semifinal in Kolkata, then their travelling distance will be longer as Kolkata is farther from Bengaluru compared to Mumbai.

  • If India play their semifinal in Kolkata and qualify for the Final, the Indian team will cover a massive distance of 8,681 nautical miles in the entire tournament.

  • India's longest travel in the entire World Cup will be from Guwahati to Trivandrum to play the second warmup match against the Netherlands. In the group stage, the trip from Ahmedabad to Pune to play against Bangladesh will be the shortest one.
